Sony is expanding age verification on PlayStation. Adult accounts in Australia must now confirm their age before adding R18+ games or other content from the PlayStation Store. Without verification, players can still play existing titles, but they can’t add new R18+ content.
The change is drawing attention after a new Reddit post showed the age-verification prompt on a PS5, and an official PlayStation support page has since confirmed the rollout. Note for German players: This rule does not currently apply in that country.
Age Verification Required for New R18+ Games
The measure applies to adult PlayStation accounts registered in Australia. Users must verify their age once per account. Both new and existing accounts may receive a prompt to confirm age. Players who skip the prompt can keep using their console. According to Sony, games already in the library remain accessible. Content rated below R18+ remains available for purchase. However, new games and add-ons with the highest rating are locked until verification is complete.

This approach differs from the age-verification system already active in the United Kingdom and Ireland, which focuses on communication features such as messages, party chats, voice chat, and streams to Twitch or YouTube. Face Scan or ID Required
For the technical implementation, Sony is once again partnering with the age verification provider Yoti. Australian users currently have two options available:
- Age estimation via a face scan
- Verification via a valid ID document
For the facial scan, users must snap a photo in a well-lit environment. Yoti’s technology analyzes the facial geometry and estimates whether the person is at least 18. Sony says Yoti deletes the facial geometry data immediately after verification. PlayStation does not receive the photo or any biometric data. Sony only receives a pass or fail result. Alternatively, users can photograph and upload an accepted ID document. Accepted documents vary by country of issue; Sony cites a passport as an example.
In some cases, Yoti may also require an additional facial scan. This so-called liveness detection confirms that the document belongs to the person in front of the camera and that the verification is not being conducted with someone else’s or a copied ID. The ID verification process typically takes three to six minutes.
Already-purchased games will not be blocked.
The distinction between existing and newly added titles is important. According to current information, an Australian user will not automatically lose access to their entire library without age verification, and already-purchased R18+ games should remain playable. The restriction applies only when a user tries to add another age-restricted title or add-on content from the PlayStation Store. It is not a retroactive lock. However, adults who want full access to the store must still complete the check.
Minors cannot use age verification to keep a standard adult account. Sony says players under 18 must use a child account managed by a parent or legal guardian. To help with this, Sony has offered the PlayStation Family App since 2025 for managing child accounts and age ratings.
Australia Tightens Digital Youth Protection Measures
This change is not isolated. Australia has tightened regulations for platforms that may give minors access to content with explicit sexuality, extreme violence, or other potentially harmful depictions.
As a result, other major providers besides Sony have also introduced new age-verification measures. In Australia, Microsoft already requires proof of age for age-restricted content in the Xbox Store and Microsoft Store, and since September, the Epic Games Store has also required age verification for R18+ games. However, the companies do not all use the same procedures. Platforms may use facial scans, ID documents, credit cards, or existing account data to verify age. Sony currently offers only two methods for Australian PlayStation accounts: facial scans and ID verification. Confirming the account’s stored date of birth is not enough.
No corresponding announcement for Germany
Sony has not announced an identical requirement for German PlayStation accounts purchasing or downloading USK-18 titles, so the Australian R18+ rating does not automatically create a new global rule for all adults.
The age-check system already live in the United Kingdom and Ireland also cannot be transferred directly to Germany. In those markets, Sony responds to different legal requirements and, without proof of age, mainly limits social and communication features. Taken together, these regional models show that age verification on the PlayStation Network is expanding. Which features are restricted and which forms of ID are accepted still vary by country and local regulations.
