Halo could see one of its biggest shifts since the rebranding of 343 Industries. Windows Central editor Jez Corden reports that fresh details about the long-running shooter series will drop within the next day. He has not said what the announcement will cover. Meanwhile, rumors suggest Microsoft may hand some or all of Halo’s oversight to Activision Blizzard.
An announcement of a new game is by no means certain. Instead, the update may cover Halo Studios’ structure, new development partners, or the franchise’s long-term direction. Microsoft, Xbox, Activision, and Halo Studios have not offered official confirmation so far.
Jez Corden Hints at News Within a Day
The speculation stems from several of Corden’s recent remarks. When asked about Halo’s future, the well-connected Xbox journalist first replied, “soon,” then urged fans to stay tuned.
He later narrowed the window, promising details on an “interesting development” within 24 hours. He still declined to share specifics.
Insider NateTheHate also joined the discussion. According to him, the reaction to the news is likely to vary depending on the player. That phrasing suggests it’s unlikely to be a typical game announcement that most of the community would welcome equally. Instead, it could involve a strategic or organizational decision. Once again, Activision Blizzard takes center stage.
Will Halo move under Activision’s umbrella?
According to NateTheHate, Microsoft might place the Halo brand within Activision Blizzard King in the future. Whether this actually means complete control over the series or merely an internal reorganization of the studios involved remains to be seen.
For several months, reports have indicated that Microsoft plans to reorganize future Halo development, and Activision and individual Call of Duty studios have been mentioned as possible partners.
In August, reports surfaced that Sledgehammer Games had worked on a very early prototype for a Halo multiplayer project. That test ended in July, but Microsoft has continued to explore Activision’s involvement in future Halo games. A move under the Activision umbrella would therefore not be a complete surprise. Activision has decades of experience with major shooter productions and already coordinates several studios working together on Call of Duty. A similar model could help Microsoft release new Halo games and content more regularly. However, this alleged change has not yet been confirmed. It also remains unclear what role Halo Studios would play afterward.
Halo Studios Could Become the Central Oversight Body
One scenario would let Halo Studios retain creative direction, story, and identity while other teams handle larger portions of development. Recent reports claim Halo: Campaign Evolved already followed this model, with Halo Studios in the lead role but many technical and gameplay tasks handled by external developers.
We’ve previously reported on the extensive external support involved in the development of Halo: Campaign Evolved. If Microsoft were to expand this model, Halo Studios could, in the long term, function more as a central oversight body for the brand. Activision teams or other Xbox studios would then develop individual games, multiplayer projects, or spin-offs.
This structure could allow multiple projects to run in parallel while Halo Studios maintains creative oversight. However, spreading development across too many teams risks diluting the franchise’s identity.
A new game announcement remains possible, however.
A traditional reveal remains possible. Multiple rumors circulate about unannounced Halo projects, including a multiplayer title said to be in very early testing. A developer’s portfolio suggests Halo Studios has been running internal tests on an ungreenlit project. However, as long as a game hasn’t reached the so-called “greenlight” phase, it can be fundamentally changed or canceled at any time. Reports also persist about remakes of Halo 2 and Halo 3. Both remakes are said to have been discussed internally or to already be in development. None of the projects has been officially announced yet.
Our earlier report has more details on those alleged remakes, including a possible PlayStation release. A brand-new mainline entry is also under discussion, but previous reports suggest it is still several years away, so the imminent news does not necessarily signal an imminent launch.
The new strategy is particularly important for PlayStation players
The future of Halo now affects more than just Xbox and PC players. Halo: Campaign Evolved marked the series’ official PlayStation 5 debut in July 2026.
In our review of Halo: Campaign Evolved on PS5, the modernized campaign impressed. However, it’s still unclear whether other entries in the series will also launch on PlayStation. If Activision becomes more involved with Halo, a cross-platform release strategy could become more likely. Call of Duty continues to launch on multiple systems, and Microsoft may aim to position Halo as a major global shooter brand as well.
However, such a shift would not guarantee future PS5 releases. Microsoft has repeatedly emphasized that it decides platform strategy on a game-by-game basis. A new main Halo installment could therefore be treated differently than remakes or standalone multiplayer projects.
Official confirmation could come soon.
The current report draws on several converging insider statements. The only relatively concrete detail is Corden’s hint that new information should arrive within a day. It is not yet clear whether Microsoft will announce a move to Activision, introduce a new structure for Halo Studios, or unveil a new game. It also remains to be seen whether potential personnel changes or further job cuts will be part of the announcement.
Until an official announcement arrives, neither the rumored move to Activision nor any new Halo projects should be considered confirmed. Based on the current statements, the uncertainty probably won’t last much longer. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
