A question about GTA 6 briefly left Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick speechless during a public interview. A Wall Street Journal journalist asked whether the publisher had too few other successful games in its portfolio given the upcoming Rockstar blockbuster. Zelnick’s reaction drew laughter from the audience. He then reminded his interviewer that Take-Two has much more to offer than just Grand Theft Auto.
GTA 6 Leads to an Unusual Moment in the Interview
On November 4, 2026, Zelnick appeared at the WSJ Tech conference in California, where he and journalist Jessica Toonkel discussed the upcoming release of GTA 6 and the publisher’s financial outlook.
Toonkel noted GTA 6’s importance to Take-Two and asked whether the publisher might rely too heavily on a small number of major hits. Zelnick initially reacted with a look of surprise.
Laughter rippled through the audience. Zelnick then ticked off the company’s successes and concluded, “Look at the facts.”
Take-Two owns 15 successful game franchises
Zelnick explained that Take-Two owns more than 15 series, each with at least one entry that has sold over five million copies. He argued that this gives the publisher one of the industry’s strongest portfolios of proprietary brands.
Grand Theft Auto is one of them, but the list goes on. He highlighted Red Dead Redemption, whose latest entry has sold over 65 million copies worldwide, plus the popular online modes GTA Online and Red Dead Online. NBA 2K also plays a key role for Take-Two.
Zelnick called the basketball sim one of the world’s most successful sports series, especially strong in North America. He also highlighted:
- BioShock
- Borderlands
- Civilization
- WWE 2K
- NBA 2K
- Red Dead Redemption
- Grand Theft Auto
Take-Two also has numerous other titles through its mobile gaming division. Zelnick rejected the suggestion that the publisher relies solely on GTA.
Was the question really that far-fetched?
Still, the concern has merit. GTA 6 is likely one of Take-Two’s most financially significant launches ever, so players, investors, and analysts have high expectations. The interview also touched on the company’s stock price.
The stock recently traded well below its all-time high even as the launch of GTA 6 approached.
The fundamental question of how dependent Take-Two is on the success of a single blockbuster is therefore entirely valid. However, the company has more than one successful brand. Zelnick apparently wanted to highlight that distinction. A single game can be particularly important to a publisher’s financial success without rendering all other brands meaningless.
GTA 6 is set to launch very soon
The conversation comes at a particularly interesting time: Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, leaving Rockstar Games and Take-Two just two weeks before what is likely the year’s most important launch.
Pre-orders so far signal massive demand. Sensor Tower estimates that roughly 7.71 million digital copies have been pre-ordered worldwide, valued at about $751 million, though Rockstar and Take-Two have not confirmed these numbers.
We’ve already reported on this in our article “GTA 6 Is Heading Toward 8 Million Sales, and PlayStation Is Leaving Xbox Far Behind.” At the very least, the numbers show why GTA 6 is currently receiving so much attention. For Take-Two, the upcoming launch comes with enormous financial expectations.
Zelnick Remains Cautious About GTA 6
Despite the strong demand, the Take-Two CEO refuses to declare victory early. In an interview, he emphasized that he never announces success until it is realized. The caution is understandable, given the enormous expectations. After all, GTA 6 must thrill millions of players while also meeting lofty financial targets.
It remains to be seen whether the title will set new records right from its launch. In any case, Zelnick made it clear that he does not underestimate the financial significance of the Rockstar game. At the same time, he wanted to remind everyone that even without GTA 6, Take-Two is a company with numerous successful brands.
One Question, One Clear Answer
The unusual exchange highlights just how much pressure has built up around GTA 6. To many observers, Take-Two currently seems to consist almost exclusively of Rockstar Games and Grand Theft Auto, yet the company also owns well-known franchises such as Borderlands, BioShock, and Civilization. Zelnick’s reaction is therefore likely to raise a smile among many gamers.
The question of Take-Two’s financial dependence on GTA 6 remains interesting nonetheless. Even with 15 successful franchises, a disappointing launch of Grand Theft Auto VI could still hit the publisher hard. Take-Two owns many major brands, but right now none is drawing as much attention as GTA 6. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
