Xbox Series X and S receive a surprising graphics upgrade, and even older hardware benefits.

Microsoft and AMD have announced a notable technical innovation for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Game developers can now use FSR Upscaling 4.1.2, an AI-based graphics technology, on both consoles. Because the tech is tailored to Xbox hardware several years old, future games and updated titles can deliver better image quality without forcing players to buy new consoles.

AMD FSR 4.1.2 Comes to Xbox Series X and S

On November 4, AMD announced that FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 is available for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. The feature ships with the October 2026 Microsoft Game Development Kit, so developers can now integrate it into their projects. The biggest change is the addition of machine learning.

Previously, many Xbox titles relied on older FSR methods to upscale the internally rendered resolution to the target output. The new version better reconstructs visible details, delivering a sharper, more stable image.

It’s notable that both Xbox consoles use AMD’s older RDNA 2 architecture, so Microsoft and AMD have tailored the calculations for the Xbox Series X and S.

Two models offer greater flexibility.

To ensure the new technology works well on both consoles, developers can choose between two variants. The Full-INT8 model prioritizes maximum image quality, while the Lite-INT8 version demands far less computational power.

AMD says the Lite model is less than half the size of the full variant, so developers can choose better image reconstruction or lighter GPU load depending on the game.

This flexibility could be especially useful for the Xbox Series S, which has far less graphics muscle than the Series X. More efficient upscaling might let developers deliver better visuals even on the weaker hardware, though actual benefits depend on each game’s implementation.

Will all Xbox games now automatically get better graphics?

There’s an important caveat: FSR 4.1.2 won’t be automatically enabled for all Xbox games.

The feature is initially available only to developers, who must integrate it or release updates. It is not a console-wide update that automatically improves every title. AMD also does not guarantee higher frame rates.

Upscaling can lower the internal render resolution and preserve GPU power, but the gain varies by title and settings. There is no comprehensive list of Xbox games that already support FSR 4.1.2.

Xbox handhelds are also set to benefit.

The collaboration between AMD and Microsoft isn’t limited to stationary consoles. FSR Upscaling 4 is also intended for the Xbox handheld ecosystem, particularly devices in the ROG Xbox Ally family.

Microsoft aims to give developers a common technical foundation that works across Windows and Xbox devices, which could make it easier to integrate modern upscaling techniques. Studios won’t have to rebuild the technology from scratch for each platform, and for Microsoft this is another step toward closer Xbox-PC integration.

A Late Graphics Upgrade for the Current Xbox Generation

Microsoft launched the Xbox Series X and Series S in November 2020. Now, six years later, developers can tap into a graphics upgrade once linked to far more modern hardware. It’s notable that AMD and Microsoft have adapted the technology for the existing consoles.

For gamers, this opens new possibilities for future titles. Visible improvements will depend on developer support for FSR 4.1.2. One thing is certain: even six years after launch, Microsoft continues to evolve the Xbox Series X and Series S. Share your thoughts in the comments.
