Need for Speed Put on Hold Indefinitely as EA Shifts Focus to Battlefield

For racing fans, it’s a disappointing announcement: Electronic Arts has officially confirmed that the Need for Speed franchise has been put on hold indefinitely. Criterion Games, the studio behind the most recent entries, will now focus entirely on the Battlefield franchise. As a result, a new Need for Speed or Burnout game is nowhere on the horizon.

Criterion Games Moves Fully to Battlefield

Rumors had been circulating for months that Criterion Games was shifting priorities. Those rumors have now been confirmed.

The studio is no longer working on racing games and is dedicating all of its resources to Battlefield. Speaking to IGN, Rebecka Coutaz, Vice President and General Manager of Battlefield Studios Europe, made it clear that the team’s full attention is on Battlefield.

For now, there are no plans for a new Need for Speed or Burnout title.

The End of an Era for Arcade Racing?

Need for Speed has been one of gaming’s most iconic racing franchises since the 1990s. Classics such as Underground, Most Wanted, Carbon, and Hot Pursuit helped define the arcade racing genre for an entire generation.

With fast-paced street racing, extensive customization, and intense police chases, the series became one of EA’s biggest gaming brands.

Criterion also made its mark with the Burnout franchise, which remains one of the most beloved arcade racers thanks to its spectacular crashes and high-speed gameplay.

Why Is EA Making This Decision?

While Need for Speed has remained a recognizable name, recent entries struggled to match the success of the franchise’s golden years.

Players frequently criticized the games for:

  • A lack of innovation
  • Technical issues
  • Inconsistent quality
  • Failing to capture the magic of earlier titles

At the same time, Battlefield has become one of EA’s highest-priority franchises. By moving Criterion Games entirely to Battlefield, EA hopes to strengthen the series and improve its long-term future.

Is Need for Speed Gone Forever?

Despite the gloomy news, EA has not officially canceled the Need for Speed franchise. Instead, it has been placed on an indefinite hiatus.

That means a comeback remains possible in the future. However, there are currently no announced projects, no development team attached to the franchise, and no indication that another studio will take over.

For now, fans will have to wait and hope that one of gaming’s most legendary racing franchises eventually returns.

Our Opinion

Need for Speed helped shape the arcade racing genre for decades and inspired countless players around the world.

While this announcement is disappointing, an extended break could ultimately benefit the franchise. Instead of releasing another rushed sequel, EA now has the opportunity to rethink the series and potentially bring it back with fresh ideas and a stronger vision.

What do you think? Should EA revive Need for Speed in the future, or is it time to let the legendary franchise rest? Let us know in the comments!
