The Resident Evil franchise has taken players to countless locations over the years, from the zombie-infested streets of Raccoon City to remote villages and secret research facilities. One setting, however, has never been explored in a mainline entry: Japan.
That could eventually change, according to comments from Resident Evil Requiem producer Masato Kumazawa.
Capcom Has Considered a Japanese Setting
Speaking in a recent interview, Kumazawa revealed that a Resident Evil game set in Japan is something both fans and developers have thought about for years.

According to the producer, many members of the development team have discussed the possibility internally. While he stopped short of confirming any future plans, he noted that Japan could potentially appear as a setting in a future installment.
For a franchise created by a Japanese developer, such a move would mark a significant first.
A Fresh Direction for the Series
A Japanese setting could open the door to entirely new types of horror experiences. From dense urban environments and rural mountain villages to abandoned temples and underground facilities, the country offers plenty of opportunities for atmospheric storytelling.
With Capcom’s RE Engine delivering increasingly realistic visuals, a modern Resident Evil set in Japan could provide one of the franchise’s most unique environments to date.
Umbrella Japan Could Return
Longtime fans may remember Umbrella Japan, a division of the infamous Umbrella Corporation that has rarely been explored in the games.
A future title could revisit that part of the lore, introducing hidden facilities, forgotten experiments, or entirely new biohazard threats tied to the company’s past activities in the region.
For now, Capcom remains focused on Resident Evil Requiem, but the door appears open for new locations in future entries.
