The Resistance franchise is still considered one of the most memorable PlayStation shooter series from the PS3 era. Even though the franchise has been inactive for many years, the community’s interest has never fully disappeared. Recent comments from former developers have now reignited discussions about whether Resistance 4 or at least a remaster collection of the older games could eventually become reality.
Resistance 4 Was Actually Pitched to Sony
Earlier this year, former Insomniac Games founder Ted Price surprisingly confirmed that Resistance 4 was once internally pitched at Sony.
According to Price, the team had already developed a concept for a new entry that would have continued the Chimera invasion storyline while modernizing the franchise for a new generation. However, Sony ultimately decided not to move forward with the project.
The reasons reportedly included market conditions, strategic decisions, and the direction of PlayStation’s portfolio at the time. The comments marked the first official confirmation that Resistance 4 had at least been seriously discussed behind the scenes.
Why the Franchise Disappeared
During the PS3 generation, Resistance was one of PlayStation’s major first-person shooter franchises. The series became especially known for its alternate-history sci-fi setting, dark atmosphere, creative weapons, and large-scale multiplayer battles.

Over time, Insomniac Games shifted its focus toward other projects. Franchises such as Ratchet & Clank and later Marvel’s Spider-Man became the studio’s primary priorities. The developer is currently also working on Marvel’s Wolverine.
As a result, Resistance slowly faded into the background.
Fans Continue to Ask for a Comeback
Even after years of silence, the series is still regularly discussed within the PlayStation community. Following recent debates surrounding live-service games, many players have expressed interest in seeing more traditional single-player shooters return.
Among the most requested ideas are:
- Resistance 4
- a full Resistance Collection for PS5
- remasters of the original trilogy
- modern remakes of the older games
The demand for story-focused shooters with darker sci-fi themes appears to remain strong among longtime fans.
A Resistance Return Could Fit PlayStation’s Current Strategy
While nothing has been officially announced, many players believe the franchise could fit surprisingly well into PlayStation’s current direction.
Sony recently brought back Resistance: Retribution on modern platforms, something many fans interpreted as a sign that the company still recognizes the value of the brand.
At the same time, PlayStation continues to invest heavily in remasters and revivals of older franchises. Games such as The Last of Us, Until Dawn, and Horizon have shown that Sony remains interested in revisiting established properties.
Because of that, rumors and speculation surrounding Resistance have continued to resurface over the years.
The Future of Resistance Remains Unclear
At the moment, there is still no official confirmation regarding Resistance 4 or any large-scale remaster project.
However, the recent developer comments make one thing clear: the franchise has not been completely forgotten internally, and fan interest remains surprisingly strong even many years after the last major release.
Whether Sony will eventually revive Resistance remains to be seen.
