While CD Projekt RED continues to devote most of its resources to The Witcher 4, development on The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is also progressing steadily behind the scenes.
The studio has now confirmed that the upcoming expansion has entered an advanced stage of production, with a surprisingly large development team supporting the project.
Nearly 200 Developers Are Working on the Expansion
During a recent earnings call, CD Projekt joint CEO Michał Nowakowski revealed that around 190 developers are currently involved in Songs of the Past.

Most of the team comes from Fool’s Theory, a studio closely associated with CD Projekt RED and several former Witcher developers. Despite the external support, CD Projekt RED remains heavily involved and continues to oversee the creative direction of the expansion.
Inspired by Blood and Wine
The developer has previously stated that Songs of the Past is intended to be comparable in scope to Blood and Wine, widely considered one of the greatest RPG expansions ever released.
That comparison has naturally raised expectations among fans, especially given The Witcher 3’s enduring popularity more than a decade after launch.
The Witcher 4 Remains the Priority
Although Songs of the Past has a substantial team behind it, The Witcher 4 remains CD Projekt RED’s biggest project by far.
More than 500 developers are currently working on the next mainline Witcher game, while additional teams continue development on Cyberpunk 2 and other internal projects.
Gamescom Reveal Planned
Songs of the Past is scheduled to launch in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Fans can expect their first major look at the expansion during Gamescom, although CD Projekt RED has indicated that the presentation will likely be a guided showcase rather than a hands-on demo.
With nearly 200 developers involved and production entering its final stages, Songs of the Past is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated RPG expansions in recent years.
