Fresh rumors surrounding the PlayStation 6 suggest Sony’s next-generation console could end up costing significantly more than many players expected. According to well-known hardware leaker Kepler_L2, the estimated production costs for the PS6 have increased substantially in recent months, potentially making a much higher launch price unavoidable.
Sony has not officially commented on the report, so the information should be treated as speculation for now.
Production Costs Have Allegedly Increased
Posting on NeoGAF, Kepler_L2 claimed that the PlayStation 6’s bill of materials (BOM) has increased by roughly $200 compared to earlier estimates.

Back in March, the console’s production cost was reportedly estimated at around $760, which could have allowed Sony to launch the system at approximately $699 while absorbing part of the cost through hardware subsidies.
According to the leaker, that scenario may no longer be realistic due to rising component prices.
Could the PS6 Cost $1,000?
If current hardware trends continue, Kepler_L2 believes the PlayStation 6 could launch with a price tag approaching $999.
The leaker even suggested that this could be the best-case scenario for a potential Digital Edition if manufacturing costs continue to rise.
Whether Sony would actually release the console at that price remains unknown. The company could still choose to subsidize the hardware and recover costs through software sales and subscription services such as PlayStation Plus.
Delaying the Console May Not Help
Interestingly, the leaker does not believe Sony would benefit from delaying the PS6.
According to Kepler_L2, if memory and storage prices continue increasing, launching later could actually make the situation worse. On the other hand, if prices stabilize, there would be little reason to postpone the console.
