The future of the James Bond video game franchise remains undecided, but Amazon has now clarified earlier comments that sparked concern among fans. While previous statements suggested the company could choose any developer for future Bond games, Amazon has since indicated that IO Interactive remains a strong candidate to continue working on the series beyond 007 First Light.
For now, however, no final decision has been made.
Earlier comments sparked fan speculation
The discussion began after Jeff Gattis, General Manager of Amazon Luna and Amazon Game Studios, explained that Amazon’s involvement with the James Bond rights gives the company the freedom to determine which studio develops future entries in the franchise.
Many fans interpreted those remarks as a sign that IO Interactive might not automatically return for a sequel, even if 007 First Light proves to be a success.
Amazon has since clarified its position
In a recent interview with GamesIndustry, Gattis softened those earlier comments, explaining that no decision has yet been made regarding the franchise’s future.
He also emphasized that IO Interactive could very well remain the studio behind future James Bond games, making it clear that the Danish developer is still firmly in the conversation for upcoming projects.
At this stage, however, Amazon has not officially announced a sequel or confirmed any long-term development agreement with the studio.
Building larger entertainment franchises
Gattis also discussed Amazon’s broader strategy for its entertainment brands. According to him, the company aims to connect games, television, films, and merchandise more closely to create larger multimedia franchises.
He pointed to Tomb Raider as one example. Amazon is currently publishing Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst, both of which are being developed by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog.
Fans remain optimistic
Although Amazon has yet to reveal its long-term plans for the James Bond franchise, the company’s latest clarification is likely to reassure many fans.
Following the strong reception of 007 First Light, many players believe IO Interactive is the ideal studio to continue the series, thanks to its experience creating stealth-focused gameplay and cinematic storytelling.
Whether the developer ultimately returns for another James Bond title is something Amazon is expected to announce at a later date.
