A unique modding project is currently drawing attention within the PlayStation community. A modder known as wewillmakeitnow has showcased a fully functional PlayStation 4 Slim rebuilt into a handheld form factor. The device is capable of running PS4 games natively and represents a significant technical achievement—though it remains strictly a personal project.
Extensive Hardware Modifications Required
In its original form, the PS4 Slim measures approximately 288 × 265 × 39 mm, making it far from portable. To transform the console into a handheld-sized device, the modder performed extensive hardware modifications. This included physically cutting and reshaping the motherboard while maintaining full functionality.
A custom cooling solution was also developed, featuring a microcontroller-based system that actively monitors temperatures and manages safety thresholds. Power is supplied by six 21700 lithium-ion cells, providing a combined capacity of around 130 Wh. This setup allows for an estimated two to three hours of gameplay, though it also places limitations on transport, particularly for air travel.

Larger and Thicker Than Modern Handhelds
Exact dimensions were not disclosed, but the handheld features a 7-inch OLED display with a 1080p resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. Based on this, the device is likely slightly larger than popular handheld PCs such as the Steam Deck or ROG Ally.
One notable compromise is the thickness. Conservative estimates suggest the unit is at least 35 mm thick. The rear of the device is completely flat, with an exposed cooling fan positioned at the center. As a result, ergonomics were clearly not the primary focus, with functionality taking precedence over comfort.
Not for Sale, Not for Production
The modder emphasized that the handheld PS4 Slim is a personal engineering challenge and is not intended for commercial sale or mass production. This is unsurprising, given the legal and licensing implications of such a product.
Despite these limitations, the achievement is impressive. The device can run the full PS4 Slim library natively, without relying on streaming or external hardware.
A Technical Showcase, Not a Consumer Product
While the handheld is not practical for everyday use, it demonstrates what is possible through advanced hardware modification and engineering creativity. The project also highlights continued interest in dedicated PlayStation handheld hardware—an area where official solutions remain limited.
