PSBlackout Starts August 23 – Could the PlayStation Network Also Face Disruptions?

The major PSBlackout campaign is scheduled to begin on August 23, 2026. PlayStation players are being encouraged to stay logged out of PlayStation Network for an entire week, avoid launching games, and spend no money on the PlayStation Store.

But another question is now emerging around the campaign: Could the blackout period also see deliberate disruptions or cyberattacks targeting PlayStation Network?

There is currently no official or credible confirmation that such an attack is planned. Nevertheless, the period beginning August 23 could become particularly interesting for Sony.

PSBlackout begins on August 23

The protest itself is real and has been planned for several weeks.

From August 23 through August 30, 2026, participating PlayStation users are being asked to keep their consoles switched off where possible—or at least avoid signing into their accounts. Players are also encouraged not to make purchases through the PlayStation Store.

One of the groups behind the campaign is the game preservation initiative Does It Play?

PlayStation Fans Call for Week-Long Boycott Following Sony’s Physical Games Decision

The goal is to send Sony a visible message through reduced player activity and lower spending across its digital ecosystem.

The campaign has largely been fueled by concerns surrounding the increasing digitalization of PlayStation’s business and uncertainty among some players about the long-term future of physical games.

Could the PSN also face attacks?

This is where things become much more speculative.

With the PSBlackout approaching, there has been discussion about whether the protest could potentially be accompanied by other actions. In theory, that could include attempts by unrelated individuals or groups to deliberately disrupt PlayStation’s online services.

However, there is an important distinction to make:

There is currently no credible evidence confirming that a coordinated cyberattack against PlayStation Network is planned for August 23.

It would therefore be misleading to claim that PSN will definitely be attacked—or taken offline—when the blackout begins.

The timing could nevertheless attract attention from potential attackers. If PlayStation Network experienced significant technical problems during a widely promoted protest campaign, it could initially become difficult to determine how much of any decline in activity was caused by players voluntarily participating in the boycott and how much was related to service disruptions.

Sony will likely be watching August 23 closely

The upcoming week could therefore be interesting for Sony for several reasons.

The company will be able to see how many players actually participate in the PSBlackout and whether the campaign has any measurable impact on logins, playtime, or PlayStation Store spending.

If technical problems were to occur at the same time, interpreting those numbers could become considerably more complicated.

For now, the situation is clear: The PSBlackout has been announced. A cyberattack against PlayStation Network has not.

Whether unusual PSN outages or additional protest actions emerge after August 23 remains to be seen.

What is certain is that August 23 could become an unusually interesting day for the PlayStation community.
