Rising console prices could become an important issue just months before the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6. While Sony says it has secured enough components to maintain its planned PS5 production, higher hardware costs could still make upgrading to the current generation more expensive for some players.
However, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick does not believe rising console prices will significantly hurt the success of GTA 6.
Higher console prices aren’t ideal, Take-Two admits
During a recent investor conference, Zelnick was asked about increasing hardware costs and their potential impact on the gaming industry.
The Take-Two CEO acknowledged that higher console prices are obviously not ideal. Lower hardware prices generally make current-generation systems accessible to a larger number of consumers.
Despite this, Zelnick does not currently see rising hardware prices as a major threat to Take-Two’s business or GTA 6.
The company remains confident that it is delivering entertainment experiences consumers want, and Zelnick does not expect higher console costs to significantly slow demand.
GTA 6 could drive huge demand for PS5
The situation will become particularly interesting around November 19, 2026, when GTA 6 is scheduled to launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Given the enormous anticipation surrounding Rockstar Games‘ next blockbuster, the release is expected to encourage many players to upgrade to current-generation consoles.
Sony recently confirmed that it has secured enough memory components to support its planned PS5 production throughout the current fiscal year. That should reduce the risk of major hardware shortages during the GTA 6 launch period and the holiday season.
However, Sony has not guaranteed that PS5 prices will remain unchanged. Rising memory costs and other pressures across the electronics industry could still affect hardware pricing in the future.
PC is becoming increasingly important for Take-Two
Zelnick also discussed the growing importance of the PC gaming market.
According to the Take-Two CEO, the situation has changed dramatically over the past two decades.
Around 20 years ago, PC versions of certain Take-Two releases sometimes represented only 1% to 2% of total sales.
Today, comparable releases can generate approximately 40% to 50% of their sales on PC, according to Zelnick.
For Take-Two, this reflects a broader industry shift toward more open platforms and shows just how important PC gaming has become to major publishers.
When will GTA 6 come to PC?
One major question, however, remains unanswered: When will GTA 6 be released on PC?
At launch, Rockstar Games is focusing exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Take-Two’s increasingly positive comments about the importance of the PC market may give PC players some hope, but a PC version of Grand Theft Auto 6 has still not been officially announced.
Until Rockstar or Take-Two confirms its plans, any potential PC release date remains speculation.
The next major GTA 6 showcase is approaching
Before GTA 6 arrives in November, fans have another major date to look forward to.
On August 27, Rockstar Games is expected to provide an extensive new look at GTA 6.
The presentation is set to debut through Netflix before becoming available through Rockstar Games‘ official channels.
After months of relatively limited information, the showcase could mark the beginning of GTA 6’s biggest marketing push ahead of launch.
For Take-Two, meanwhile, the message appears clear: even if buying a new console becomes more expensive, the company does not expect rising hardware prices to stand in the way of what is expected to be one of the biggest entertainment launches of the year.
What do you think? Could rising PS5 and Xbox prices affect GTA 6 sales, or is the game simply too big to be slowed down? Let us know in the comments.
