Marvel’s Wolverine Brings Shinjuku to PS5 – and Even Godzilla Is Apparently Getting a Marvel Twist

With Marvel’s Wolverine, Insomniac Games is leaving behind the familiar streets of Marvel’s Spider-Man and taking Logan to several very different locations. One of the most intriguing destinations will be Tokyo.

More specifically, Wolverine’s journey will take him to Shinjuku, and Insomniac appears to have gone to considerable lengths to bring the famous district to life.

Players can expect more than just an authentic recreation of Tokyo. Even one of Shinjuku’s most recognizable landmarks has apparently been given its own Marvel-inspired twist.

Insomniac wanted Shinjuku to feel authentic

Executive Producer Eric Monacelli recently spoke with Japanese outlet 4Gamer about the work that went into recreating Tokyo.

According to Monacelli, Shinjuku is one of his personal highlights in the game.

Insomniac worked closely with its partners at Sony during development, while members of the art team actually traveled to Tokyo to study the area firsthand.

However, the goal wasn’t simply to create a perfect one-to-one recreation.

The developers also asked themselves what these familiar locations would look like if they actually existed within Insomniac’s Marvel universe.

And that’s where things get particularly interesting.

What happened to Shinjuku’s famous Godzilla?

Anyone familiar with Shinjuku will probably know exactly which landmark Monacelli was referring to.

The district is home to the enormous Godzilla head, which towers above the surrounding buildings and has become a tourist attraction in its own right.

Monacelli didn’t directly reveal what players will see at the location in Marvel’s Wolverine, but he offered a pretty strong hint.

„There’s a very famous monster statue in Shinjuku, and I think Japanese players will enjoy how we’ve interpreted it through the lens of the Marvel universe.“

That certainly sounds like Insomniac has something special planned.

Exactly what its Marvel-inspired version looks like, however, remains a secret.

A Marvel monster instead of Godzilla?

Naturally, this opens the door to plenty of speculation.

Godzilla isn’t a Marvel character, and the rights to the iconic monster belong to Toho. Whether Insomniac has secured permission to use the character in Marvel’s Wolverine is currently unknown.

It’s therefore entirely possible that players won’t see Godzilla at all.

Instead, Insomniac could replace the famous landmark with a creature from the Marvel universe.

There are certainly plenty of possibilities.

It could be an entirely fictional monster created specifically for the game, or perhaps a clever Easter egg that Marvel fans will immediately recognize.

For now, Insomniac is deliberately keeping the answer under wraps.

Tokyo will be more than just a pretty backdrop

What’s particularly interesting is the amount of attention Insomniac appears to be giving each of Wolverine’s locations.

Marvel’s Wolverine won’t take place exclusively in Tokyo.

Logan’s journey will also take him through the Canadian wilderness and to Madripoor, creating a very different visual experience compared to Insomniac’s Spider-Man games.

The studio has previously discussed developing new technology for vegetation and environmental objects that react more dynamically to the world around them.

Shinjuku should offer an entirely different atmosphere: densely packed streets, bright lights, advertisements, crowds and towering buildings.

And right in the middle of it all will be Logan.

Shinjuku could become one of Wolverine’s highlights

Exactly how large the Tokyo section will be remains unclear.

Still, the developers‘ comments make it sound like Shinjuku could become one of the game’s most memorable locations.

Insomniac doesn’t appear to be simply recreating a few recognizable Japanese streets and sending Wolverine through them. Instead, the studio wants Shinjuku to feel as though it genuinely exists within its own Marvel universe.

That could make the reinterpretation of the famous Godzilla landmark one of those small details that causes players to stop for a moment and take a closer look during their first playthrough.

Marvel’s Wolverine launches on September 15, 2026, exclusively for PlayStation 5.

And by then, we’ll finally know which Marvel monster is watching over Shinjuku.

What do you think Insomniac has used in place of Godzilla? Let us know your guess in the comments!
