Fans compare GTA 6 to GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2

Although Grand Theft Auto 6 is still several months away from its November 19, 2026 release, many fans are already asking one big question: How long will the game’s story actually be?

Rockstar Games has yet to reveal any official information about the campaign’s length, leaving the community to speculate. On Reddit, players have been sharing their expectations, with several different opinions emerging.

Rockstar remains tight-lipped

So far, Rockstar Games has only revealed the basic premise of GTA 6, confirming that the story revolves around protagonists Jason and Lucia, who become caught up in a sprawling criminal conspiracy.

However, the developer has not provided any details about the campaign’s runtime or the amount of optional content players can expect.

The same applies to the online component. At the moment, all officially confirmed information focuses exclusively on the single-player experience, while Rockstar has yet to announce when or how a successor to GTA Online will arrive.

Many Reddit users are looking at Rockstar’s previous open-world titles for clues.

For many players, GTA 5’s campaign, which takes around 30 hours to complete, serves as a reasonable benchmark. Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption 2 often requires 45 to 50 hours—or even longer—depending on how players approach the game.

Opinions differ on which direction GTA 6 should take.

Some fans hope for a significantly longer story than GTA 5, arguing that its campaign ended too quickly. Others disagree, pointing out that while Red Dead Redemption 2 is widely regarded as one of Rockstar’s greatest achievements, parts of its campaign felt overly drawn out. They would rather see a slightly shorter story with a stronger pace throughout.

Players expect far more side content

One topic, however, has generated far more agreement.

Even if GTA 6’s main story ends up being similar in length to Red Dead Redemption 2, many players believe the game will offer substantially more optional content.

The biggest reason is Leonida, GTA 6’s new fictional state. Unlike the largely rural landscapes of Red Dead Redemption 2, Leonida features major cities, beaches, densely populated areas, and a much more modern setting.

As a result, fans expect a larger variety of side missions, activities, random encounters, and optional content that will keep players busy long after the main campaign is complete.

That combination of a compelling story and a richly detailed open world has always been one of the defining strengths of the Grand Theft Auto series.

Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference

Rockstar is unlikely to reveal the campaign’s actual length until much closer to launch.

Even now, the community discussion shows that there probably isn’t a perfect runtime that will satisfy everyone. Some players want a massive, epic adventure lasting dozens of hours, while others would prefer a tighter, more focused story that maintains a faster pace.

In the end, the overall quality of the missions and the amount of engaging optional content may prove far more important than the campaign’s total length.

Until Rockstar shares official details, however, every estimate remains pure speculation.
