4A Games has officially unveiled the first gameplay footage for METRO 2039, giving fans a closer look at the next chapter in the acclaimed post-apocalyptic franchise. Alongside nearly three minutes of in-game footage, the developers also introduced a major new antagonist who appears set to reshape the future of the Metro.
The game is scheduled to launch in February 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
A New Regime Controls the Metro
The latest trailer reveals a dramatically changed Metro compared to previous entries in the series.
At the center of this transformation stands Hunter, a once-legendary Spartan Ranger who has risen to power and now leads a powerful regime beneath Moscow. According to the story details shared by 4A Games, Hunter has built his authority through propaganda, control, and manipulation, becoming the very thing the Spartans once fought against.
His rise appears to be one of the key conflicts driving the narrative forward.
The Stranger Seeks Revenge
Players will take on the role of a new protagonist known only as The Stranger.
Fueled by anger and distrust, The Stranger views Hunter as a traitor who abandoned the ideals of the Spartan Order. The story follows his journey through the Metro as he attempts to expose the truth and challenge the growing influence of Hunter’s regime.
This conflict promises to deliver one of the darkest and most personal stories in the series so far.
First Gameplay Showcases Classic Metro Action
The gameplay trailer highlights everything fans have come to expect from the franchise.
Stealth-based encounters, survival mechanics, resource management, and exploration of both underground tunnels and dangerous surface environments all make a return. The footage also showcases the series’ signature atmosphere, combining tension, horror, and immersive world-building.
Visually, METRO 2039 represents a major step forward for the franchise.
New Weapons and Tools
The trailer also introduces several new gameplay additions.
Among them is the Shatun, a brand-new stealth weapon designed for silent eliminations. Players also get a glimpse at a new type of explosive device that appears to offer additional tactical options during combat.
More information about weapons and customization is expected closer to release.
Built During Extraordinary Circumstances
4A Games once again acknowledged the unique challenges surrounding development.
The studio continues to operate across both Malta and Ukraine, with development ongoing despite the difficult circumstances caused by the ongoing war. The team has repeatedly expressed its support for employees affected by the conflict.
Launch Planned for February 2027
Following its gameplay debut, METRO 2039 has quickly become one of the most anticipated post-apocalyptic titles on the horizon.
With a darker storyline, a powerful new antagonist, and the return of the franchise’s signature survival gameplay, the next Metro entry looks set to continue the series’ legacy when it launches in February 2027.
