Sony has shared new details about how artificial intelligence is already being integrated across PlayStation Studios and the wider PlayStation ecosystem. During the company’s latest financial presentation, executives explained that AI will play a major role in the future of game development, while emphasizing that human creativity will remain at the center of the process.
The company says AI is mainly being used to speed up technical workflows and reduce repetitive tasks for developers.
PlayStation Studios Are Already Using AI Tools
Sony confirmed that several first-party studios are already working with internal AI systems designed to improve development efficiency.
One of the biggest examples is a machine learning tool called “Mockingbird.” According to Sony, the system can automatically convert performance capture data into animated 3D facial models.
Tasks that previously required hours of manual adjustments can now reportedly be completed within seconds.
Studios like Naughty Dog and San Diego Studio are said to have already used the technology in released projects.
Sony Says Human Creativity Still Comes First
Despite the growing use of AI, Sony executives made it clear that the technology is not meant to replace developers, artists, or performers.
PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino described AI as a “powerful tool” that should support creative teams rather than take over the development process.
Sony says the goal is to give developers more time to focus on:
- Gameplay design
- Storytelling
- World building
- Creative direction
AI Also Helps With Animation and Testing
Beyond facial animation, Sony is also using AI systems for:
- Hair generation technology
- Quality assurance testing
- 3D modeling workflows
- Software engineering support
- Automating repetitive workloads
The company believes these tools could help reduce development bottlenecks for modern AAA games.
PS5 Pro and PSSR Remain Key Parts of Sony’s AI Plans
Sony also highlighted the role of AI inside the PS5 Pro.
The company once again discussed PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, better known as PSSR, which uses AI-powered upscaling to improve image quality while maintaining high frame rates.
Sony specifically mentioned titles like Ghost of Yōtei and Saros while discussing the upgraded technology.
AI Is Expanding Across the PlayStation Ecosystem
Sony’s AI strategy goes beyond game development.
Machine learning systems are already being used throughout the PlayStation platform for:
- Personalized game recommendations
- Store suggestions
- Payment systems
- Merchandise recommendations
- Subscription offers
According to Sony, AI-powered transaction systems have already generated hundreds of millions of dollars in additional revenue.
Future Games Could Feature Smarter NPCs
Sony also teased experimental AI-powered NPC technology capable of creating more dynamic and reactive game worlds in the future.
While no specific games were announced, the company suggested that machine learning could significantly improve immersion in upcoming titles.
The latest comments make it clear that Sony sees AI as a major part of PlayStation’s future while still publicly placing human creativity at the center of game development.
