Xbox May Be Rethinking Its Approach to Exclusive Games

Microsoft could be reconsidering its strategy around Xbox exclusives. After bringing more first-party titles to PlayStation and other platforms over the past year, new reports suggest the company is once again debating the value of keeping games exclusive to Xbox.

The information comes from insider Jez Corden, who recently claimed on the Xbox Two Podcast that major internal discussions are currently taking place regarding the future of Xbox exclusives.

Xbox reportedly sees value in exclusives again

According to Corden, Microsoft still recognizes that exclusive games can play a major role in the success of a gaming platform. For many players, first-party exclusives remain one of the biggest reasons to choose one console over another.

In recent years, Xbox has moved further toward a multiplatform strategy. Games such as Forza Horizon 5, Sea of Thieves, and Hi-Fi Rush have launched on PlayStation and reportedly performed very well.

However, that strategy has also led to criticism from some Xbox fans. Many believe that without major exclusives, the Xbox brand risks losing its identity and making its hardware less important.

Publisher or platform could be the key question

One of the main issues reportedly being discussed internally is whether Xbox wants to be a publisher first or remain a traditional gaming platform built around its own hardware.

If Microsoft continues focusing on bringing games to as many platforms as possible, Xbox consoles could become less important over time. On the other hand, returning to exclusives could help strengthen the Xbox ecosystem and make the hardware more appealing again.

This is especially important as PlayStation continues to rely heavily on major exclusive franchises to drive console sales.

Multiplatform releases have been financially successful

From a business perspective, Microsoft’s multiplatform strategy has not been a failure. Reports claim that Forza Horizon 5 has already sold more than five million copies on PS5 alone.

The Oblivion remaster is also said to have surpassed one million units sold on PlayStation. These additional sales give Microsoft more revenue opportunities beyond the Xbox ecosystem.

Still, there are concerns that the extra revenue may come at the cost of weakening the Xbox brand. Without exclusive games, it becomes more difficult to give players a clear reason to buy Xbox hardware.

New Xbox leadership may influence future plans

New Xbox CEO Asha Sharma could also play a role in shaping the company’s future direction. Reports suggest that she is already reviewing several parts of the business, including Game Pass pricing.

Sharma has also reportedly acknowledged that many fans still want first-party Xbox games to remain exclusive.

For now, nothing has been officially confirmed. However, the latest reports suggest that Microsoft may once again be reconsidering how important exclusives are for the future of Xbox.
