"Mass Effect" is being discontinued, BioWare is closing, but there is still hope.

One of the most famous role-playing game series in gaming history faces an uncertain future. On October 21, 2026, Electronic Arts confirmed the closure of BioWare and simultaneously halted development of the next Mass Effect game. After more than 30 years, the studio behind Dragon Age, Knights of the Old Republic, and the original Mass Effect trilogy has come to an end. However, Amazon’s upcoming Mass Effect series remains unaffected by the decision.

Electronic Arts Closes BioWare After Over 30 Years

The move is part of a broader restructuring at Electronic Arts, which plans to concentrate its financial resources and development talent on a smaller set of major brands. According to Bloomberg, the publisher will eliminate around 400 jobs, with roughly 50 of those cuts at BioWare.

In an official statement, the studio confirmed its impending closure and explained that early development of the next *Mass Effect* project would also be halted. BioWare was founded in 1995 and, over the following decades, became one of the world’s most renowned role-playing game studios.

Titles such as Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Dragon Age left a lasting imprint on the genre. The Mass Effect trilogy, in particular, brought the Canadian studio worldwide fame. Its blend of science fiction, complex characters, player choices, and long-term consequences became its hallmark.

With this closure, the studio that originally created these game worlds has come to an end.

The next Mass Effect has been completely canceled

Fans struggle to accept the cancellation of the next Mass Effect, which EA had teased in December 2020. Subsequent years yielded little concrete information. Most recently, BioWare had focused entirely on Mass Effect after finishing other projects and implementing numerous internal changes.

As recently as January 2026, we reported here on PSINFO that BioWare was officially working on only a single game. At the time, the focus on Mass Effect was seen as a potential way to stabilize the company’s difficult financial situation. That hope has not been realized.

Electronic Arts has now confirmed that the project was still in an early stage of development and will not be continued. This means the announced next Mass Effect game has been canceled. However, this does not necessarily mean that Electronic Arts is permanently abandoning the entire franchise. No decision regarding future games or a potential new developer has been announced yet.

Amazon’s Mass Effect series is still moving forward.

While the future of the video game series is uncertain, the planned TV series is progressing. Amazon MGM Studios has been developing a live-action adaptation of the science-fiction universe for some time.

According to production sources cited in recent media reports, BioWare’s closure will not immediately affect the project. These reports say Amazon remains committed to the series, and the current creative team is expected to stay on board. Amazon has not issued any new official confirmation.

It’s important to note that while development is likely to continue, Amazon has not yet confirmed a production start or release date. For the Mass Effect brand, the series could still become a crucial project. If Amazon launches the show, the franchise will have a future outside the video game industry.

The series doesn’t simply retell Shepard’s story

Back in November 2025, BioWare had already revealed interesting details about the planned plot. According to these details, the live-action series is set to take place after the events of the original Mass Effect trilogy. The story of Commander Shepard will not simply be retold.

Instead, the creators are planning a new storyline set within the familiar universe. This is noteworthy because players were able to make numerous decisions themselves in the original games. A direct adaptation would inevitably have to treat certain decisions as set in stone. With a standalone story, Amazon could circumvent this problem.

Earlier reports suggested significant script changes to make the series accessible to viewers unfamiliar with the games, but screenwriter Daniel Casey later denied those claims—we covered his response in “Mass Effect Series: Writer Denies Rumors of Major Changes.”

What will happen to the planned connection between the game and the series?

The cancellation of the next Mass Effect title raises another question. Last year, BioWare said the Amazon series would sit within the official timeline and align with the planned game. Now that development has ended, that intended touchpoint is gone. It’s unclear whether the plot will need changes.

Amazon could stick with the existing story, since it was never meant to adapt a specific Mass Effect game. The studio could also adjust the series to stand more independently of any new game.

No details have surfaced about how the producers will proceed, and a new release date or final cast remains unannounced.

The future of Mass Effect remains uncertain

For Electronic Arts, BioWare’s closure is part of a broader realignment. The publisher plans to develop fewer large projects simultaneously and allocate existing resources more efficiently. Other major brands will still receive support, including Battlefield, Apex Legends, Star Wars Jedi, and Marvel’s Iron Man.

The studio’s closure represents a major shift for EA’s classic single-player RPG business.

The fate of Dragon Age is also unclear, as EA has not announced concrete plans for the franchise. As a result, Mass Effect finds itself in an unusual position: the latest game has been canceled, the studio behind it is closing, yet the planned TV adaptation is still moving forward.

It’s unclear whether Amazon’s series will breathe new life into the sci-fi franchise. For now, the only certainty is that one of the industry’s most storied role-playing game studios is shutting down, leaving fans without an announced new Mass Effect title for the foreseeable future.
