The PlayStation 6 could cost Sony far more than earlier estimates. Hardware insider Kepler_L2 now says the console’s RAM and NAND flash memory alone will exceed $680, and that figure doesn’t even include the processor, graphics chip, or other components. As a result, the total hardware bill could top $1,000. These figures are unconfirmed estimates, not official Sony production costs.
PS6 Memory Reportedly Already Costs Over $680
The new information comes from a discussion on the NeoGAF forum. On October 16, 2026, Kepler_L2 commented on the potential manufacturing costs of the next PlayStation. When asked about previous cost estimates, the insider briefly explained that RAM and NAND storage alone are now said to total more than $680.
If true, that figure would place significant pressure on the console’s cost structure. Sony still needs to add a CPU with a GPU, a motherboard, a cooling system, a power supply, a chassis, and numerous other parts.
Final assembly, packaging, and logistics also add to the bottom line. GamingBolt picked up the story on October 19, noting that earlier estimates had already pegged component costs at roughly $1,000.
However, Kepler_L2 has not provided a publicly verifiable cost breakdown, so it remains unclear whether the figure reflects actual purchase prices, internal information, or personal estimates.
Why Rising Memory Prices Could Become a Problem
Modern consoles need large amounts of memory and fast transfer rates. RAM handles games, textures, and calculations, while NAND flash underlies the internal SSD. Both components are subject to significant market-price swings.
Such swings matter for makers of large hardware platforms: even a small per-unit increase can add millions in costs when production runs into the millions. Still, open-market memory prices do not directly mirror Sony’s procurement deals.
Major manufacturers often sign long-term supply contracts with terms that can differ significantly from public market prices. Therefore, the alleged $680 figure should also be viewed with caution.
Rumors of rising PS6 costs were already circulating this summer
This isn’t the first rumor of a possible PS6 price hike. Back in June, we reported on PSINFO about rising production costs and speculation that the console could cost $1,000, also citing Kepler_L2. The insider claimed that estimated component costs had jumped in just a few months. The new RAM and NAND figures add a concrete cost element to that earlier claim. However, we don’t know if all numbers use the same methodology, so a precise trend in alleged manufacturing costs remains unclear.
Does that mean a PS6 will cost more than $1,000?
Not necessarily. There is an important difference between a console’s material costs and its eventual retail price. Sony could sell the hardware at a lower profit margin or absorb part of the costs itself initially. This approach has been common in the console industry for many years.
Further savings could come from component choices, production volumes, and long-term supply deals. Prices may also shift before manufacturing starts. Sony Interactive Entertainment has stressed that it aims to avoid substantial hardware losses.
It is currently unknown what pricing strategy the company will pursue for a new console generation. Back in the spring, we reported on PSINFO about the discussion of whether a particularly expensive PlayStation 6 could push some gamers past their financial limits. The new speculation is likely to raise this question once again.
Sony has still not confirmed a PS6 price.
So far, Sony has not announced an official retail price, the full technical specifications, or a specific release date for the PlayStation 6.
Insider reports still point to a late 2027 launch, but Sony has not confirmed that window. As a result, it’s unclear whether the PS6’s bill of materials will exceed $1,000, and no reliable retail price can be deduced from current information.
Kepler_L2’s new claim highlights, above all, how important the trend in memory prices could become for the upcoming generation of consoles. If the cited costs prove accurate, Sony would have to make difficult decisions regarding features and pricing. However, there is currently no confirmed price increase or official indication that the PS6 will be particularly expensive. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
