Star Wars Battlefront may be heading for an unexpected shift. Industry insider Jeff Grubb reports that publishers are already discussing potential developers for a third entry. DICE, which has handled the series to date, will face competition. Bungie—now owned by Sony and known for Destiny and Halo—is also in the running. No official announcement has been made.
Star Wars Battlefront 3 Could Get an Unusual Developer
The new information comes from the October 19, 2026, episode of Game Mess Mornings, where Grubb discussed the possibility that Disney—or more specifically, Lucasfilm Games—could revive the Battlefront series. The biggest question is which studio would take on such a project.
Electronic Arts and the Swedish studio DICE created the first two Battlefront games, but a sequel could mark the series’ first move to a different major shooter studio. Grubb specifically mentioned Bungie, the team behind the early Halo games and the Destiny series, which most recently worked on the multiplayer shooter Marathon.
Its experience with fast-paced firefights, online multiplayer, and long-term support could make Bungie a suitable fit for Battlefront. However, the mention of the studio does not mean a development contract has been awarded.
The insider mentions discussions, not active development.
Grubb explicitly clarified that, according to his information, Star Wars Battlefront 3 is not yet in active development. Instead, sources report discussions about which studio might take on the project. In addition to Bungie, DICE remains among the possible candidates.
The insider also hinted that Disney and Electronic Arts’ long-standing collaboration has not always been smooth, which could explain Lucasfilm Games’ interest in other developers for a potential sequel.
Disney has not officially confirmed any concrete negotiations with Bungie, and no details about budget, technical direction, or release window have surfaced. For now, the statements amount to an unconfirmed insider report about possible plans.
Why Bungie stands out
Bungie’s involvement would be noteworthy for several reasons. Sony Interactive Entertainment acquired the studio in 2022, making it part of the PlayStation group. At the same time, Sony has repeatedly stated that Bungie will be allowed to continue working across platforms even after the acquisition.
A Battlefront title from Bungie would not automatically be a PlayStation exclusive, and the Star Wars license would remain with Disney and Lucasfilm. Sony could participate through Bungie but would not gain full control of the franchise.
On the technical side, Bungie offers notable strengths.
Bungie has decades of first-person shooter expertise. Halo shaped modern multiplayer shooters across several console generations, while Destiny blends fast combat with extensive online and cooperative systems. Whether that experience suits a new Battlefront would depend on the specific game design.
After all, the series thrives not only on precise gunplay but also on large-scale battles, vehicles, iconic Star Wars locations, and the interplay of different units. A new Battlefront would therefore have to meet different requirements than Destiny or Marathon.
Battlefront’s history could play a role
The two modern Battlefront games were developed under Disney’s exclusive licensing deal with Electronic Arts. Star Wars Battlefront launched in 2015 and earned praise for its audiovisual portrayal of the Star Wars universe.
Its 2017 sequel drew heavy criticism before launch for its progression system and controversial microtransactions, especially the Star Cards that granted gameplay advantages.
Electronic Arts and DICE later overhauled the system. Over the following years, Battlefront 2 received numerous content updates and became a significantly better package for many players. Regular support ended in 2020. Since then, fans have awaited a possible sequel.
As early as 2019, we reported on PlayStationInfo.de that Star Wars Battlefront 3 was not in development at that time. In recent years, there has been repeated speculation about a third installment, though it has not led to an official announcement. The current report is particularly interesting because, for the first time, Bungie is being mentioned as a possible new development partner.
Lucasfilm Wants to Enable a Greater Variety of Games in the Future
These plans fit a broader strategy at Lucasfilm Games. Vice President Douglas Reilly recently said the company wants to work with a wider range of development studios on future Star Wars games.
The studio will consider both major productions and smaller projects, including unconventional partnerships, while continuing to work with experienced developers rather than relying solely on the industry’s largest publishers.
These comments did not mention Star Wars Battlefront 3 directly but suggest that Disney is now exploring multiple licensing options.
Since the previous exclusive deal with Electronic Arts expired, other companies can now develop new Star Wars projects, so a potential Battlefront sequel would not have to come from DICE.
Star Wars Battlefront 3 has not yet been confirmed
While a Bungie-developed Battlefront is intriguing, many questions remain. Sony, Bungie, Electronic Arts, and Lucasfilm Games have all declined to comment on the reported talks, and Jeff Grubb has not yet mentioned an active development project.
As a result, it’s unclear whether Star Wars Battlefront 3 will happen or which studio might lead it. If Bungie secured the contract, it would mark a significant win for Sony’s PlayStation division, pairing a seasoned shooter studio with one of the most famous multiplayer franchises in the Star Wars universe.
