Crimson Desert is receiving a massive expansion that even adds weddings.

Crimson Desert will receive a major content update in late October. Pearl Abyss has released a roughly six-minute trailer for the upcoming “Charting the Unknown” expansion, giving the first detailed look at the scale of the new content. In addition to their own ships, underwater worlds, and extra storylines, players will soon be able to form romantic relationships, get married, and design their own castles. The DLC also lets players manage shops and tackle new challenges for experienced fighters.

New Trailer Showcases the Scope of “Charting the Unknown”

The expansion launches on October 29, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The German release is set for 11:00 p.m. CET. Originally scheduled for mid-October, Pearl Abyss pushed the launch back two weeks to allow extra time for technical improvements and polish.

We previously reported this in our article “Crimson Desert Postpones Major Expansion Shortly Before Release.” The studio is now introducing the key game systems and, for the first time, detailing the conditions for unlocking them. “Charting the Unknown” not only expands the familiar Pywel game world but also adds many features that previously played no role or only a minor one in the main game.

New Stories for Three Familiar Characters

The expansion adds new stories for Kliff, Damiane, and Oongka. Each character now has their own narrative featuring fresh encounters, conflicts, and challenges.

Pearl Abyss says players can launch these stories through the in-game diary once the main campaign is finished. A separate ocean-exploration storyline unlocks after completing the Howling Hill main mission, giving both familiar characters and previously unexplored parts of Pywel greater weight.

Pearl Abyss has not yet revealed how long each story will be or how many extra hours of gameplay they add.

Players can build their own ships and explore the ocean.

Ocean exploration is a major new feature. Until now, players could only use Pywel’s waters for limited travel, but “Charting the Unknown” turns the ocean into a standalone region.

Once unlocked, players can build and customize their own ships or purchase vessels through a fleet manager. These new ships let them venture into the open ocean, where islands, enemy units, and chances to establish outposts await. Naval battles are also part of the expanded gameplay.

Players can also explore certain islands with Greymane companions and set up new bases, adding strategic depth beyond simple travel.

Underwater, ruins and unusual modes of transportation await

Players can also dive beneath the waves to explore Pywel’s underwater realm. There they will find sunken ruins, treasure chests, resources, and previously unknown creatures.

Diving requires no special prerequisites, but characters consume oxygen underwater, so dives are time-limited unless players equip special gear like a diving suit.

The trailer also shows unusual ways to move around underwater, such as special vehicles and the option to hitch a ride on large marine creatures. The new region is thus designed not only to offer additional collectibles but also to enable unique forms of exploration.

Romances and Weddings Will Be Part of Crimson Desert

One of the most surprising additions concerns relationships with other inhabitants of the game world. In “Charting the Unknown,” the three playable main characters can build closer bonds with certain non-player characters.

Players who interact with them regularly and earn their trust can deepen the relationship. This can lead to romantic connections that may eventually culminate in a wedding. Pearl Abyss explicitly confirms that marriage is among the new possibilities. These social relationships will also have an impact on life at Greymane Camp.

Once the camp reaches a certain expansion level, friendly characters can visit and spend time there, adding a social layer to a game previously focused on combat and exploration. The developers have not yet detailed which characters can be romanced or how deep each relationship path will be.

Design Your Own Houses and Even Castles

The housing system is also getting a major expansion. Players will soon place individual furniture pieces and adjust layout, including walls, windows, and other structural elements, for far more personalized living spaces.

The expanded building system unlocks after players complete specific tasks at Greymane Camp and its faction storyline.
Players can also conquer three castles in Pywel after finishing the main story and follow-up quests.

Once liberated, additional missions unlock, letting players claim each fortress as a personal base. They can then decorate both interior spaces and courtyards with various items.

Manage Businesses and Generate Your Own Income

Charting the Unknown also introduces new management features. Players can lease and manage various businesses across Pywel, such as a restaurant in Vellua and a blacksmith’s shop at the Zargan Tankworks.

Players can assign companions to manage each outlet and set which goods to sell, and much of this oversight happens through the world map, so constant visits are unnecessary.

Well-run businesses gain popularity and earn extra income. These features unlock only after players finish specific faction quests and construct the Greymane Camp. The update expands the game world’s economy and gives players fresh incentives to explore every region beyond the main story.

New Boss Mode Aimed at Experienced Players

In addition to the exploration and building systems, the update adds new challenges for combat-seasoned players. The Garden of Trials mode challenges players to defeat a series of familiar bosses in succession. The challenge unlocks after completing the main story.

Players who clear the successive fights earn special rewards. The expansion therefore adds content for players who have already heavily upgraded their characters and defeated the main game’s strongest enemies. The current preview does not yet reveal the total number of bosses or whether additional difficulty levels will be offered.

The expansion launches on October 29

“Charting the Unknown” costs $24.99 in the U.S. and is already available for pre-order. As a pre-order bonus, Pearl Abyss is offering additional diving gear for Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane. The expansion will launch on October 29 at 11:00 p.m. CET for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. In parts of Asia, the launch is set for October 30 due to the time difference. With new stories, ocean exploration, and extensive building and relationship systems, Charting the Unknown offers far more variety than initial announcements suggested.

It remains to be seen how extensively each system is implemented and how well it integrates with existing gameplay. The full patch notes should provide more details at launch. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
