PS5 suddenly receives a new update, and, surprisingly, GTA 6 might play a role.

On October 21, 2026, Sony quietly released new system software for the PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro. Firmware version 26.07-14.20.00 appears to deliver only minor improvements. However, the timing has drawn attention. Recent reports indicate progress toward jailbreaking the previous PS5 firmware, and GTA 6—one of the year’s biggest launches—is imminent. Sony has not confirmed whether the update addresses either development.

Sony Releases PS5 Update 14.20

According to Sony, the update focuses on improvements to notifications and the user experience on certain screens. No major new features are mentioned in the official patch notes. New features for the DualSense, additional graphics settings, or extensive changes to the user interface are therefore not part of the announcement.

According to MP1st, the download weighs about 1.2 GB, typical for a minor PS5 update.

It’s interesting to note, however, that Sony had just released new firmware in early October. Version 14.10 specifically included security fixes and improvements to overall system stability. We previously reported on this in our article “New PS5 Update Is Here, and Sony Improves Security and Stability.” Now, less than three weeks later, the next update is already here.

New Jailbreak Development Sparks Speculation

The timing coincides with new reports from the PS5 homebrew scene. After older firmware versions were recently successfully exploited, there are now reportedly also advances regarding version 14.10.

Such progress is relevant to Sony because certain security flaws can let attackers run unauthorized code and bypass console restrictions. However, a discovered vulnerability is not the same as a fully functional, publicly released jailbreak.

There is no reliable confirmation that a matching jailbreak for firmware 14.10 is already circulating, nor has anyone proven that update 14.20 patches the specific vulnerabilities discussed.

The official patch notes do not list any specific security fixes this time, but observers still suspect a connection. Console manufacturers often release new firmware to eliminate known vulnerabilities, so it is possible that 14.20 does exactly that. Confirmation is pending.

Why GTA 6 Is Suddenly Making Headlines

The situation becomes particularly interesting due to the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar’s new open-world adventure is set to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Early October leaks from the PlayStation Store backend suggested GTA 6 might require PS5 firmware 14.10 or higher, as reported by the account PlayStation Game Size and covered in our article “GTA 6 Apparently Requires the Latest PS5 Firmware.”

If that data is accurate, up-to-date system software will be required to launch the game normally. That’s why the latest jailbreak developments matter. A functional exploit on a supported firmware could enable unauthorized software.

However, a jailbreak alone cannot run a modern console game on PC or other hardware; further technical requirements would be necessary.

Did Sony release the update specifically for GTA 6?

MP1st speculates that Sony may be responding to recent PS5 security developments with the new firmware, and the upcoming release of GTA 6 is also discussed as a possible reason.

However, there is no official link between the update and Rockstar’s game. Neither Sony nor Take-Two Interactive has said that firmware 14.20 was created specifically to protect GTA 6, nor has it been confirmed that the title will require this version at launch.

Earlier PlayStation Store listings only required firmware 14.10, and that requirement could still change before launch. As a result, regular PS5 owners have no reason to worry. Installing new system software is routine and often unlocks the latest online features.

Here’s how to install the new PS5 firmware

If the update hasn’t arrived automatically, open Settings, select “System,” then “System Software Update and Settings.” If version 14.20 is available, download and install it from there.

If automatic updates are enabled, the console will usually handle this process on its own. Sony generally recommends keeping the PS5 system software up to date. For players who use homebrew or jailbreaks, however, an update may mean that previously available technical capabilities are lost. A rollback to older firmware versions is not normally supported during regular operation.

Further Updates Possible Before GTA 6 Launch

Sony has just under a month left until the planned release of GTA 6.

It is currently unknown whether further system updates will be released during this period. Possible additional security measures or changes to the minimum system requirements for the Rockstar game have also not been announced yet. For now, the only certainty is that firmware 14.20 is available immediately and officially includes minor improvements to the user interface.

Some speculate that Sony is responding to recent jailbreak developments and protecting the upcoming GTA 6 launch, but only further technical analysis or official comment will confirm the changes. Share your thoughts in the comments.
