Of all companies, Ubisoft may save a prominent Xbox studio. Microsoft’s sweeping gaming division restructuring this summer left Arkane Lyon’s future in doubt. Now there’s new hope: According to a recent Bloomberg report, Ubisoft and two other companies have submitted concrete acquisition offers for the French development studio. This is particularly interesting for fans of Marvel’s Blade, as the upcoming vampire adventure is still in development. However, a final decision has not yet been made.
Ubisoft Reportedly Submitted an Offer for Arkane Lyon
As Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier reported on November 3, several companies want to acquire the long-established studio, and Ubisoft is among them.
Alongside Ubisoft, two other companies have submitted offers to Microsoft, but their identities and bid amounts remain unconfirmed. No details about contract terms have been publicly disclosed. It is important to note that a takeover offer does not guarantee a purchase by Ubisoft.
No binding agreement or sale has been announced, but the report confirms that the search for a new owner has yielded concrete prospects.
Microsoft is even considering a sale to its own management
Another intriguing option under discussion would see Microsoft sell Arkane Lyon to its own management, potentially returning the studio to independence. Such a move would fit the ongoing Xbox restructuring.
Other former Microsoft studios have already broken away from the corporate group this year, including Double Fine Productions and Compulsion Games, which now operate as independent companies. Whether a similar model would be possible for Arkane Lyon remains to be seen.
A takeover by Ubisoft, on the other hand, would place the studio under another major publisher. With the current information, it is impossible to reliably assess which option offers the best prospects for employees and ongoing projects.
Just recently, Arkane was still facing closure
These new offers arrive at a crucial time. In October, reports surfaced that Arkane Lyon might close. According to French newspaper Le Monde, about 217 jobs are at risk. Microsoft announced a summer restructuring of its Xbox division that included selling several development studios.
This decision put Arkane Lyon under pressure. A key consultation phase was originally set to end on November 13. If a viable solution is not found, the studio could close. We covered the situation in our in-depth report “Marvel’s Blade Faces Cancellation and a Dramatic Countdown Begins for 217 Developers.”
Microsoft has since extended the negotiations by a month, pushing the new deadline to December 13, 2026. The extra time could let buyers review offers and negotiate a deal, though the extension alone does not guarantee a rescue.
What happens now with Marvel’s Blade?
For gamers, aside from the studio’s future, one project is the main focus: Marvel’s Blade. The action game was announced in December 2023 and is being developed by Arkane Lyon. It centers on the well-known Marvel vampire hunter Blade, who uses supernatural powers to fight dangerous enemies.
Set in Paris, the game uses a third-person perspective. Since the December 2023 reveal, Bethesda has shared little new information, fueling speculation about the title’s fate amid the restructuring. Employee representatives have stressed that significant development work is already complete.
Microsoft has also stated that it is actively seeking a partner who could facilitate continued development and eventual release of Marvel’s Blade, so the game is explicitly at the center of the talks. However, it is not known whether a potential acquisition by Ubisoft would also include the rights to Marvel’s Blade.
A takeover does not automatically mean the game will be saved
There is a key legal issue specific to Marvel’s Blade. Arkane Lyon is developing the game under a well-known Marvel brand, and the associated rights do not automatically transfer to the studio. Therefore, a sale of Arkane would not necessarily allow a new owner to continue and release the project unchanged.
Existing licensing agreements and any new deals between the involved companies will be key. For instance, Microsoft might keep certain publishing rights while a new owner continues development, or the parties could negotiate different terms. So far, none of these options has been confirmed.
As a result, the potential impact of a change in ownership on Marvel’s Blade remains unclear. The project has not been officially canceled.
Why Arkane Might Be of Interest to Ubisoft
A potential acquisition by Ubisoft would be noteworthy for several reasons. Both companies have strong ties to the French gaming industry. Arkane Lyon has made a name for itself with series like Dishonored and games like Deathloop. The studio is particularly known for so-called “immersive sims.” These games give players multiple ways to solve problems.
Instead of following a fixed path, players can sneak, fight, combine abilities, and exploit the environment. That design sets Arkane apart from many traditional action developers. Ubisoft, for its part, has extensive experience with open-world games, stealth mechanics, and large-scale international productions.
Franchises such as Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry show that Ubisoft already operates in similar spaces. However, it’s too early to assume any joint projects or concrete plans. Ubisoft has not announced an acquisition or outlined a public strategy for Arkane.
Xbox May Lose Another Well-Known Developer
For Microsoft, selling Arkane Lyon would mark another shift in its gaming division. The company acquired Bethesda and the remaining ZeniMax studios in 2021, bringing well-known brands and development teams under the Xbox umbrella. However, Microsoft is now pursuing a different strategy.
Several studios have been closed, sold, or spun off as independents. Back in September, we reported on the far-reaching consequences of the restructuring in our article “Xbox Undergoes Radical Overhaul, and Ninja Theory Faces Closure.” Arkane Lyon remains one of the unresolved cases.
A successful sale would mark Microsoft’s parting with another long-established developer, yet employees could gain the chance to continue their work and finish existing projects under new ownership. Financial terms have not been disclosed.
A decision could come before Christmas.
These new reports clarify the situation for Arkane Lyon for the first time. In October, discussions centered on a possible closure and investor searches, but now several concrete acquisition offers are on the table. According to Bloomberg, Ubisoft is among the interested parties, along with two other companies and the option of a management buyout.
No agreement has been signed, and the extended consultation period running until mid-December gives all parties more time. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will accept an offer or pursue another solution.
The outcome is critical for the roughly 217 employees and for fans of Dishonored, Deathloop, and Marvel’s Blade. Arkane Lyon, one of the most creative studios of recent years, could either secure a new future or disappear in the Xbox shake-up. Share your thoughts in the comments.
