World of Warcraft for Xbox? Microsoft Deletes Telltale Post and Backtracks

World of Warcraft on Xbox? An official Microsoft post briefly made this possibility seem real. The UK Xbox account suddenly listed World of Warcraft: Forever among upcoming Xbox games for November 2026, but the post was quickly removed. Microsoft later clarified that the mention was a mistake and that the game remains PC- and Mac-exclusive. The incident has nonetheless reignited speculation about a possible console release for Blizzard’s famous MMORPG.

Xbox Announces World of Warcraft and Deletes the Post

For a brief moment, a long-standing wish of many Xbox players seemed poised to come true. On November 1, the official UK Xbox account on X posted an overview of upcoming November releases and urged players to free up storage space.

Surprisingly, World of Warcraft: Forever appeared in the accompanying graphic alongside other titles. At first glance, the message seemed clear: Microsoft had included the Blizzard game in a preview of upcoming Xbox releases. A user spotted the unusual entry and shared a screenshot on Reddit.

The screenshot spread quickly and sparked speculation about a possible console launch. However, the original post was short-lived. Microsoft removed it and published a corrected version that omitted World of Warcraft. That swift edit immediately raised questions about whether Xbox had inadvertently preempted a secret announcement.

Microsoft Calls the Incident a Mistake

Shortly afterward, the official Xbox account responded. When asked, Xbox UK explained that World of Warcraft: Forever would launch via Battle.net for PC and Mac. An Xbox version would not be available.

The team apologized for the confusion and removed the post, later reposting a corrected version without the game.
As a result, there is still no official confirmation of a console release.

The deleted post alone is not enough to infer a secret announcement. Nevertheless, the attention is understandable. After all, World of Warcraft is one of the most famous online role-playing games of all time and, despite its long history, continues to be predominantly associated with the PC. A native console launch would therefore be a significant step for the brand.

Why Fans Still Believe in an Xbox Version

The speculation isn’t entirely baseless. As recently as late October, Holly Longdale, one of the key executives responsible for World of Warcraft at Blizzard, discussed the game’s long-term future. She emphasized making World of Warcraft accessible on more devices and in a variety of usage scenarios.

Particularly interesting was her mention of the upcoming Xbox hardware codenamed Project Helix. Microsoft has already confirmed that this platform is intended to support both Xbox and PC games. This could blur the line between traditional console gaming and PC gaming even further in the future. The increasing controller support in World of Warcraft also aligns with this trend.

However, gamepad support does not equal a console release. A PC title can work fine with a controller without launching on the Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S. Longdale’s remarks outline a possible long-term direction, not a confirmed Xbox release.

Project Helix Could Change the Situation

This development is particularly interesting in light of Microsoft’s upcoming console generation. Project Helix was officially announced as the next Xbox platform back in March. The concept is intended to more closely integrate the classic Xbox with the PC, thereby offering players more options for accessing their game libraries. We had already covered the announcement in our article “New Xbox Console Project Helix Confirmed: Microsoft Is Working on Next-Gen Hardware. On such a platform, a game like World of Warcraft could become interesting in the long term. After all, the MMORPG was developed over many years for mouse and keyboard. A port to traditional consoles would have to account not only for the controls but also for the extensive user interface, the inventory, and communication between players.

A more PC-oriented Xbox could tackle these challenges in ways past consoles could not. However, the specific technical capabilities Project Helix will offer remain unclear. Support for PC games does not guarantee that every Windows title will run on the new Xbox without restrictions.

Blizzard is now part of Microsoft

The swift spread of these rumors also reflects the new corporate structure. Since Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard, World of Warcraft has been part of its gaming business, placing both the Xbox platform and the long-running RPG franchise under the same umbrella.

A closer tie between the two units makes economic and strategic sense. Microsoft is pushing to put its games on every device—Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, handhelds, and the cloud—while still tailoring release strategies for each title.

Not every title launches on every platform. Porting an online role-playing game with an established technical infrastructure to consoles would be a major undertaking. Microsoft’s ownership of both Xbox and Blizzard does not, on its own, confirm that such a port is in development.

World of Warcraft Remains a PC Game for Now

For now, the situation is clear. Microsoft has explicitly corrected an official Xbox overview that accidentally listed “World of Warcraft: Forever.”

Microsoft later clarified that the title is intended for Windows PCs and Macs via Battle.net, and the company has not announced a release on Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S. No specific date for a potential console version has been set. The debate is unlikely to fade soon.

New controller support, Blizzard’s long-term platform strategy, and Microsoft’s Project Helix plans still invite speculation about a console launch, as does our earlier coverage of potential changes to Xbox Project Helix and the next PlayStation generation.

The key question remains whether Blizzard will ever announce a native Xbox version. Until then, the deleted social media post is one thing above all else: a curious slip-up that has once again brought a long-standing community wish into the spotlight. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
