Sony has released PS4 Update 14.00, but the package brings no major new features.

The PlayStation 4 remains on Sony’s update roadmap. On September 16, 2026, the company quietly released system software version 14.00 for the PS4 and PS4 Pro. Despite the significant version jump, the patch notes promise only performance and stability improvements.

Version 14.00 is intended solely to improve the performance and stability of the system software. No new features, changes to the user interface, or additional convenience features are mentioned for the PS4. The update is noteworthy nonetheless. The original PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013 and is still receiving new firmware nearly 13 years later.

PS4 Update 14.00 Doesn’t Bring Any Major New Features

At first glance, the leap to a new major version seems more significant than the update actually is. While Sony occasionally included minor visible changes in previous major firmware versions, version 14.00 appears to be a classic maintenance update. The official changes are brief: Sony mentions improvements to the performance and stability of the system software.

No further details are currently available. Anyone who boots up their PS4 after the update should therefore not expect any new menus, features, or major changes. This also sets version 14.00 apart from last year’s PS4 Update 13.00. Back then, Sony had at least made minor adjustments to notifications and the user experience on various screens. This time around, it’s significantly less spectacular.

The PS4 Is Still Being Supported

The mere fact that Sony is still releasing updates for the console is now almost more interesting than the patch’s contents. The PlayStation 5 is approaching its sixth birthday, and Sony has long since shifted its games, services, and marketing focus to the current console generation.

PlayStation Plus has also made this shift. Since early 2026, PS4 games have no longer been a regular feature of the monthly Essential lineup. We’d already reported on this in detail when Sony shifted the focus of PlayStation Plus further toward the PS5.

However, the older console hasn’t been completely abandoned just yet. Sony continues to keep the system software alive and regularly releases minor maintenance and security updates. In June, for example, firmware version 13.52 was released. This update focused specifically on security fixes. Version 14.00 is now the next major update.

Interesting Reactions from the Homebrew Community

The update is drawing extra attention from a different angle. Firmware 14.00 is being discussed intensively within the homebrew and modding community. This stems from developments surrounding older PS4 system versions, such as 13.52.

Some developers and users had already suggested that certain information or exploits would surface only after new firmware shipped.

Since version 14.00 launched, the conversation has gained significant momentum. However, this does not automatically mean Sony patched a previously unknown security vulnerability in PS4 Update 14.00.

The official patch notes only mention performance and stability improvements, and Sony has not publicly detailed the underlying changes. For most PS4 owners, the debate is irrelevant. Players who use their console normally and want to keep accessing online services can install the update as usual.

At the same time, the PS5 is receiving a much more interesting update

The contrast with the PlayStation 5 could hardly be greater. The PS5 is also receiving a new system update today—version 14.00—but the changes there are much more extensive.

The PS5 Pro gains improved PSSR support, voice-chat adjustments, a new community section in the Welcome Hub, and extra system-settings tweaks. On the PS4, Sony is now focusing mostly on maintenance and basic upkeep, which is hardly surprising given the hardware’s age.

Thirteen years on, the PS4 is still going strong.

That lengthy support underscores just how successful the PlayStation 4 was for Sony.

Sony has shipped more than 117 million PS4 consoles worldwide, and millions remain in active use years after the PS5 launched. For a long time, publishers released games simultaneously for both generations, but the industry has shifted focus to current-gen hardware in recent years as new titles demand more power.

As a result, we shouldn’t expect any major new features for the PS4 from future firmware updates. The fact that Sony is still maintaining the console behind the scenes, however, should please owners of older devices. Version 14.00 is the latest example of this: while the update isn’t spectacular, Sony clearly hasn’t forgotten the PS4 just yet. Let us know what you think in the comments.
