Fallout 76 has taken a major technical leap on PlayStation 5. The online role-playing game is now available as a native PS5 version for the first time, thanks to today’s update. At the same time, Bethesda is launching “The Slitter,” a new multi-week horror event, Season 26, and several fundamental changes to the game.
The upgrade ends a lengthy wait for PlayStation players, who until now played Fallout 76 on PS5 through backward compatibility with the PS4 build. We first reported the native PS5 version in June, and it launched on September 15.
Fallout 76 Now Runs Natively on the PS5
This generational leap is the biggest change in today’s update. Bethesda has been testing the native build for months and, for the first time, invited console players onto a public test server to stress performance and stability on PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S in real-world conditions.
On the standard PlayStation 5, Fallout 76 now targets 60 frames per second and up to 1440p resolution, with VRR support on compatible displays. The update also boosts view distance and shadow quality beyond the previous version.
On PS5 Pro, the game pushes 4K at 60 FPS on compatible displays. Bethesda adds that the native build is crucial not only for these gains but also for more targeted console optimizations down the road.
The Slasher Runs Rampant in Appalachia
The technical upgrade launches alongside an unusual new content update. “The Slitter” brings a horror story to Appalachia that unfolds over several weeks rather than a single day or classic quest line.
The story centers on a series of brutal crimes that echo the pre-war “Vest Pocket Slasher,” a notorious serial killer. Players must uncover whether the legend has returned or if copycats are at work, unlocking new clues and activities along the way.
Emergency alerts deliver updates, and players must eliminate infestations, complete daily-operation challenges, and even dig unmarked graves. Bethesda calls “The Slitter” a new kind of update for Fallout 76.
In the end, the fake Vest-Pocket Slasher awaits
Each activity builds on the last, and the threat escalates until players face the alleged Vest-Pocket Slitter.
Players who progress through the event can earn special rewards, including a unique Power Armor set and a new melee weapon called the “Super Slash.” Unlike many previous seasonal activities, the studio prioritizes an ongoing narrative in which not all content is available on day one.
Season 26 Launches Simultaneously
Season 26, titled “Beware the Blood Moon,” launches at the same time. Players will still collect S.C.O.R.E., earn tickets, and trade them for seasonal rewards.
The rewards are clearly inspired by the update’s horror theme and include new outfits, a Blood Moon paint job for Power Armor, a creepy Cultist Fountain, and a dedicated Blood Moon Weather Control Station for the C.A.M.P. The Season system itself is also getting an interesting expansion.
Old Seasons Are Returning
With this update, Bethesda is introducing what it calls “Legacy Seasons.” This means that in the future, players will not only be able to participate in the current season but also catch up on content from a selected older season at the same time. This should be particularly interesting for returning players. Fallout 76 has been running since 2018 and has had many time-limited seasons. Players who joined late or took a break could not unlock many cosmetic rewards at all. Legacy Seasons now give them a way to unlock certain older content. The current season, “Beware the Blood Moon,” launches this new system.
More Freedom with Unique Weapons
Crafting is also expanding. Fallout 76 now features more than 80 uniquely named weapons, but until now players haven’t enjoyed the same freedom with legendary modifications for these weapons as they have with standard arms. The new update changes that.
Players can now modify legendary mods for unique weapons at workbenches, customizing many special weapons to their build for the first time. Long-time players may value this change more than a simple stat tweak because it lets them reevaluate existing gear.
For Fallout 76, the PS5 version is particularly important in the long term
In terms of content, “The Slasher” will likely draw the most initial attention. In the long run, however, the native PlayStation 5 version could prove more significant. The previous PS4 foundation imposed technical limitations on Bethesda. With a dedicated version for current-generation consoles, the studio can tailor improvements to modern hardware.
Bethesda has already stated that this very possibility is a key reason for the upgrade. Fallout 76 is set to continue for a long time to come. The game is now nearly eight years old and has received numerous major expansions since its rocky launch. Most recently, Burning Springs added new areas and content. The successful Fallout series has also brought significantly more attention to the entire brand once again.
The fact that Bethesda is now developing a native console version shows quite clearly that Appalachia is far from over. For PlayStation players, September 15 is therefore interesting for two reasons: Fallout 76 is getting new content and, at the same time, is finally making the full transition to the current generation of consoles.
