On September 16, 2026, Sony released a major system update for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. Version 26.06-14.00.00 brings visible improvements to voice chat and the Welcome Hub. PS5 Pro owners will notice the biggest change: enhanced PSSR image quality activates automatically after installation.
As a result, even titles built for the previous PSSR version now gain the benefits of Sony’s newer image-reconstruction tech, promising a sharper, clearer picture.
Improved PSSR is now automatically enabled on the PS5 Pro.
The biggest new feature in PS5 Update 14.00 concerns PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. Sony had already released the new generation of PSSR in March 2026. Until now, however, PS5 Pro owners had to go into the settings and enable the “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” option if a game was still using the original version of the technology.

That manual step is now eliminated. Once version 26.06-14.00.00 is installed, the option is automatically enabled. We first reported on the beta in early August, when automatic PSSR activation was available only to select testers; today it rolls out to everyone.

The feature is exclusive to the PlayStation 5 Pro.
Older PSSR games can also benefit
Importantly, support is not limited to new releases. Sony says the enhanced PSSR also works with titles originally built for the first version of the upscaling tech, so developers do not have to rewrite every game for the new implementation.
The magnitude of the improvement varies by title, but Sony promises a sharper, clearer image with stronger benefits for fine details, motion, and long-term image stability. We published a comprehensive list of supported games back in March.
Since then, the list has grown significantly. Supported titles include Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Resident Evil Requiem, Silent Hill 2, Alan Wake 2, Control, Monster Hunter Wilds, Cyberpunk 2077, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
Sony has significantly improved PSSR since the PS5 Pro’s launch
PSSR is now a core feature of the PS5 Pro. At launch, the tech drew mixed reactions. Fine details, hair, vegetation, and fast motion could still show flickering or other reconstruction artifacts. Sony has refined the system several times since then.
The current build incorporates AMD’s Project Amethyst tech and reportedly runs much more stably than the original PSSR. Enabling the improved version by default signals Sony’s newfound confidence in the system.

Voice chat now shows who’s speaking.
The update also adds new features for owners of a standard PS5. During voice chat, the console now shows which participant is speaking. Players can enable the speaker indicator through the voice chat card in the Control Center and choose where on-screen it appears.
The feature is especially handy in large parties where it’s hard to tell which voice belongs to which player, and names can be hidden again if preferred.
Welcome Hub Gets New Community Widget
Another new feature concerns the Welcome Hub. Sony is adding the new “Community Activity” widget there. This widget offers two views. The “Trending” view displays ten multiplayer games or modes that are currently surging in popularity, making new releases and games with major content updates easier to spot.
The second view, “Top 10,” lists the ten most popular games in your country or region from the past week. It’s the first Welcome Hub feature that clearly shows what other PlayStation players are playing right now.
New Bluetooth Setting Aimed Primarily at Esports Events
In select regions, Sony is also adding an option to disable Bluetooth entirely through the Advanced Accessory Settings menu. The company says this feature is intended for esports events and other setups where multiple controllers and consoles operate at the same time.
However, disabling Bluetooth prevents the PS5 from entering Rest Mode and stops the HDMI connection, so Sony advises using the feature only in these specialized scenarios.
PS5 Update 14.00 Is Much More Than Just a Stability Patch
Version 26.06-14.00.00 also delivers the usual performance and stability improvements.
This release goes beyond the typical stability fixes. PS5 Pro owners will appreciate the automatic enablement of the improved PSSR, which applies the more advanced image reconstruction as soon as a supported game launches, without any extra user input.
Even on the standard PS5, the new speaker indicator and the Community widget introduce visible changes. Version 14.00 has been available via the PlayStation 5 system settings since September 16. Let us know what you think in the comments.
