PlayStation 6 was suddenly unveiled—or at least that’s what a surprisingly large number of people believed for a short time. A supposed Sony leak spread across social media within hours and was picked up by gaming accounts and early news sites. However, neither Sony nor a well-informed insider was behind it. Comedy group Mega64 orchestrated the entire prank and later released a fake PS6 reveal trailer. The incident shows how quickly gaming leaks can spread.
Anyone who checked the original source should have spotted the ruse quickly.
Mega64 announced a supposed massive Sony leak
It all began on September 7. Mega64 posted a brief message on social media stating that they’d heard about “INSANE leaks” and that Sony might announce something big the following day. The time mentioned was around 10 a.m. Pacific Time. Apparently, that was all it took.

Numerous gaming accounts shared the rumor within minutes, and some speculated that Sony might unveil the PlayStation 6, alter its controversial disc strategy, or make another major announcement. Several websites also ran with the story.
The problem: Mega64 has spent decades producing comedy videos, parodies, and gaming skits, not insider hardware leaks.
Then a PS6 reveal trailer actually came out
Mega64 didn’t let the story fizzle out. At the announced time, the group released a video titled:
“PS6 Hardware Reveal Trailer.” Viewers expecting technical specs, a new controller, or a first look at Sony’s console got something else entirely. The video mocks Sony’s current approach to physical games and shows a PlayStation 6 that doesn’t exist.
The central message: No physical console, no physical limits. Mega64 was clearly poking fun at the ongoing debate about Sony’s planned phase-out of new physical PlayStation releases. In the end, the supposed PS6 was nothing but hot air.
Many accounts had taken the joke seriously beforehand
The prank was especially entertaining because the original report circulated as a potential leak before the video even dropped. Push Square reports that gaming accounts—some with tens of thousands of followers—picked up the claim, and some supposed insiders hinted that they had heard about an upcoming Sony announcement.
Once the prank was revealed, several of those posts were deleted. The fake trailer quickly racked up more than 150,000 views, giving the joke a bigger audience than many legitimate PlayStation rumors.
Sony had nothing to do with any of this.
To be clear: Sony never revealed the PS6. Sony Interactive Entertainment did not participate in the stunt and has not commented on the PlayStation 6 in response to the Mega64 video.
Although the next generation of PlayStation has long been the subject of numerous reports and leaks, a full presentation of the console has yet to take place. Many of the technical specifications currently circulating also come from unofficial sources and should be treated as such. Mega64 has now provided a good example of this—whether unintentionally or very deliberately.
The prank hits a sore spot in leak culture
In fact, the incident is simply a well-executed gaming prank. What makes it noteworthy is how quickly a single social media post morphed into a supposed leak.

This likely won’t be the last false alarm regarding PS6 rumors
As Sony draws closer to the next PlayStation generation, similar stories will likely surface more often. Interest in the PS6 is enormous.
Claims about RAM, graphics architecture, handheld plans, or release windows race across the gaming landscape within hours. Mega64 has now exploited this dynamic for a prank. We still haven’t seen a real PS6, though.
