GTA 6 gives Jason and Lucia different fighting styles.

In GTA 6, Jason and Lucia differ not only in personality and backstory; they also fight very differently up close. According to an in-depth preview session at Rockstar North, Lucia is a technical, agile fighter who relies on kickboxing and mixed martial arts. Jason, by contrast, favors brute strength, hard punches, and classic street-brawling tactics. As a result, swapping between the protagonists may affect gameplay far more than the character changes in GTA 5 did for Michael, Franklin, and Trevor.

The details come from Italian content creator MikeShowSha, who attended a Rockstar preview alongside Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson.

Lucia fights using kickboxing and MMA

These differences are most evident in close-quarters combat. According to the preview, Lucia favors technique, speed, and agility. Her style incorporates kickboxing and mixed martial arts, matching Rockstar’s official backstory: her father taught her how to fight from a young age. In the gameplay footage released so far, she has already been shown striking opponents with kicks, quick counters, and relatively precise movements. The new preview now provides additional context for this. Lucia’s animations aren’t simply meant to depict the same attacks as Jason’s but with a different character model. Rather, it appears that Rockstar has actually developed distinct fighting styles for both characters.

Jason, on the other hand, relies on raw power

Jason, by contrast, looks rugged. He acts like a classic street fighter, relying on powerful punches and raw strength. His moves emphasize sheer force over technical combinations.

Players controlling Lucia may pressure opponents more quickly with kicks and combinations, while Jason may appear slower but land harder single hits. Rockstar has not yet explained the specific gameplay stats behind these differences. For example, the studio has not confirmed whether Jason deals more melee damage or if Lucia attacks and dodges more quickly.

This could make character switching even more important

GTA 5 already featured three distinct protagonists: Michael, Franklin, and Trevor, each with unique abilities and stats, yet their combat mechanics felt similar. GTA 6 appears to expand on that idea. Jason and Lucia don’t just have different fighting styles. Preview reports also indicate that their fitness, routines, and other traits are simulated separately, and the uncontrolled character will pursue their own activities. As a result, Jason and Lucia may feel like two distinct characters rather than interchangeable models.

The entire melee combat system has also been expanded

The August “Extended Look” already showed that Rockstar has significantly overhauled melee combat compared to GTA 5. Lucia could dodge, counter, and land various kicks, and context-sensitive actions were on display. GTA 5 was comparatively simple in this area.

Most brawls boiled down to spamming the same attack and occasionally dodging. GTA 6 instead relies on varied animations and situational combat. Unique styles for Jason and Lucia therefore extend that system logically.

Training could also play a role

The returning fitness system adds another layer. Jason and Lucia can train, build muscle, and change their physiques, but one gym visit is not enough to permanently keep the gains.

Players must train regularly to maintain fitness. GTA 6 also tracks separate stats for body fat and sleep quality, and their impact on close-quarters combat is still unclear.

For instance, a fitter Jason might land harder blows, and a fitter Lucia might sustain rapid combos longer. That remains speculation, however. The only confirmed details are that these physical stats exist and that the characters’ appearances change as a result of training.

Rockstar is making both characters more distinct in gameplay

This is probably the most interesting aspect of the new information. Rockstar doesn’t seem to be simply giving Jason and Lucia the same mechanics and then just swapping out the story and dialogue. Lucia is technical and agile, while Jason relies more on raw strength.

Their backstories reflect these differences: Lucia learned to fight from her father at a young age, while Jason joined the military after a troubled childhood and later worked for drug smugglers in the Leonida Keys.

It remains to be seen whether these fighting styles will grow or change through training. For now, switching between Jason and Lucia should feel different visually and mechanically. GTA 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
