007 First Light Had a Bigger Budget Than the Entire Hitman Trilogy

IO Interactive’s latest James Bond adventure, 007 First Light, is proving to be one of the studio’s most ambitious projects to date. New details suggest that the game carried a development budget of around $200 million, making it more expensive than the entire modern Hitman trilogy combined.

The figures highlight just how much confidence IO Interactive placed in its first major James Bond title. After years of success with Agent 47, the Danish developer appears to have gone all-in on bringing the iconic spy franchise to life.

A Massive Investment in James Bond

According to recent reports, 007 First Light spent approximately seven years in development and required an estimated $200 million budget.

For comparison, the combined development costs of the World of Assassination trilogy are believed to total around $180 million. Reports suggest that Hitman (2016) cost roughly $100 million, Hitman 2 around $60 million, and Hitman 3 approximately $20 million.

That means 007 First Light alone surpassed the total investment made across all three Hitman games.

Strong Reviews and Early Sales Success

The large budget appears to be paying off. Since launch, 007 First Light has received positive reviews from both critics and players, with praise directed toward its cinematic presentation, action sequences, and authentic Bond atmosphere.

The game has also reportedly passed 1.5 million copies sold shortly after release, providing a strong start for what could become a long-term franchise.

Such early success is particularly important given the scale of the investment behind the project.

Could This Be the Start of a New Bond Series?

Before launch, IO Interactive hinted that 007 First Light could serve as the foundation for a larger James Bond gaming universe. The studio suggested that future entries could follow if the first game resonated with players.

Based on the initial reception and sales performance, the chances of additional Bond games appear promising. While no sequel has been officially announced, the early momentum gives IO Interactive plenty of reasons to continue building on the franchise.

A New Era for IO Interactive

For many years, Hitman defined IO Interactive’s identity. With 007 First Light, however, the studio may have opened the door to its next major franchise.

The game’s reported budget, lengthy development cycle, and strong launch performance demonstrate just how important the James Bond license is to the company’s future plans. If the momentum continues, players could be seeing much more of Bond from IO Interactive in the years ahead.
