Ubisoft is launching a new promotion for The Division 2 during the same week that GTA 6 is scheduled to launch. While millions of players await Rockstar’s open-world adventure, the French publisher aims to keep its community engaged with additional missions and rewards. The “Shepherd Event Project” runs from November 17 to 26, 2026, overlapping directly with the planned GTA 6 launch on November 19. What’s particularly interesting: At the same time, The Division 2 is receiving extensive improvements, including full cross-play between PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
Ubisoft Launches Event to Coincide Exactly with the Release of GTA 6
The overlap is sure to spark discussion in the gaming community. Rockstar Games still plans to release Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026, and Ubisoft will launch a new limited-time event in The Division 2 just two days earlier.
The Shepherd Event Project begins on November 17 and continues through November 26, 2026, placing most of the event within the critical launch window for GTA 6. Ubisoft has not commented on whether the overlap is intentional, so it is unclear if the publisher intends to compete directly with Rockstar’s blockbuster.
The overlap is notable because GTA 6 is expected to command much of the industry’s attention at launch. It is an unusual competitive situation for an online shooter that launched in 2019.
Players Are Encouraged to Help Other Agents
The initiative highlights community collaboration: players respond to calls for help and assist fellow agents on missions. Ubisoft will roll out six consecutive projects, each requiring players to earn an additional Shepherd rank.
All six projects are available from day one, so participants can pace themselves. Completing a project awards 700,000 experience points and ten exotic components, while the first five tasks also grant one Reconstructed Cache each.
Anyone who completes all six projects will earn the named Mk16 weapon, the Malinois. The developers are retaining an improvement from the previous Shepherd event: instead of just one automatic recognition, up to three are still possible, letting players level up faster.
Crossplay Also Launches During GTA 6 Week
Almost as interesting as the event is another change. Ubisoft is finally introducing full cross-play for The Division 2 in November. This will allow players on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC to play together in the future. However, the transition will take place in several steps. Today, November 3, new icons and adjustments to the user interface will first appear.
On November 10, PC players will move to the new cross-play servers, and the PC leaderboards will reset. On November 17, the full rollout will hit all three platforms, letting PlayStation and Xbox users switch to the new infrastructure and play together.
Cross-play is enabled by default but can be disabled on the character-selection screen. That means one of The Division 2’s biggest new features launches in the same week as GTA 6. We first reported on the original cross-play plans back in August: The Division 2’s “Echoes of Central Park” takes players to a dark new location.
The new Central Park expansion is also being released today
However, November 17 isn’t the only important date for The Division fans.
Today, November 3, Ubisoft is also launching the paid expansion Echoes of Central Park. It returns players to New York and opens a larger slice of the famous green space. The area served as a mass grave during the pandemic and has since become a hazardous zone.
The expansion features a dark story, new enemies, fresh abilities, and repeatable endgame activities. Its narrative is told as a flashback with an unreliable narrator, heightening uncertainty and mistrust.
We’ve already covered the full content in our article “The Division 2 Turns Central Park into a Dark Endgame Nightmare.” With today’s DLC and the upcoming cross-play features, Ubisoft continues to invest heavily in the loot shooter, which is now more than seven years old.
Clans Get Significantly More Space
Existing groups will also benefit from the update. Ubisoft is doubling the previous capacity, raising the maximum number of members in a clan from 50 to 100. This change accompanies the launch of new cross-play servers. As soon as the first clan member switches to the new infrastructure, the corresponding clan will also be transferred.
Spots will remain reserved for members who have not yet signed up, and Ubisoft plans to allow a three-month period for this. Clan leadership will also be taken into account during the transfer. If the actual clan leader is not the first person to switch, another member will temporarily take over leadership.
Once the original leader returns within the window, they automatically resume their role. These measures are designed to ensure that platform merging does not disrupt existing communities.
New Mission and Additional Rewards Roll Out Today
Today’s update, version Y8S3.3, also introduces new challenges, including the Master Climax mission, which goes live on November 3.
Anyone who completes this challenge on Master difficulty for the first time will earn the exotic “Loaded for Bear” gloves, which grant the “Afterburn” talent. Each hit applies multiple marks to enemies, and reloading consumes those marks to deal extra weapon damage. Ubisoft is also revamping the PvP mode “Conflict.”
An expanded results screen will soon clarify each player’s contribution to the team’s success, highlighting not only kills and assists but also defensive actions, support, and neutralized enemy abilities. Additional awards will recognize diverse playstyles, shifting the spotlight away from players with the highest kill counts.
Is this really a jab at GTA 6?
The timing naturally invites speculation. Ubisoft has attempted in the past to position its own major productions against established open-world brands. The comparison between Watch Dogs and Grand Theft Auto is particularly well-known.
Before the first Watch Dogs launched, some saw it as a potential competitor to GTA 5. However, one key difference applies here: The Division 2 is not a new rival launching alongside GTA 6. The shooter has been out since March 2019 and will simply receive fresh content and technical improvements in November.
The Shepherd Event Project is also a relatively limited community event. Therefore, it would be an exaggeration to speak of a deliberate challenge to Rockstar Games. For now, these are simply two different release schedules that overlap in time. Whether Ubisoft deliberately chose the date or simply stuck to its existing update schedule remains unclear.
The Division 2 Must Hold Its Own Against GTA 6
Nevertheless, November could turn out to be an interesting month for Ubisoft. Today sees the release of “Echoes of Central Park,” a major expansion designed to bring back existing players.
Full cross-play support arrives on November 17, and the Shepherd Event Project begins the same day with several exclusive rewards. These updates give players several reasons to stay with The Division 2 over the coming weeks.
However, GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, so many players will probably shift their attention—at least temporarily—to Rockstar. It’s impossible to predict how much this will affect The Division 2’s player numbers, and Ubisoft has not stated that it intends to compete with GTA 6.
For players, the overlap is a win-win: while Rockstar prepares one of the year’s biggest releases, an established online shooter gets fresh content and long-awaited cross-platform play. The coming weeks will show whether The Division 2 can keep enough agents in the field. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
