The Marathon rumor mill has taken an interesting turn. Bungie has now explicitly denied some of the alleged insider information that has recently been circulating. Marathon Creative Director Julia Nardin clarifies that Bungie has no plans to merge Destiny and Marathon. That claim, from an extensive leak, is false.
However, the same rumor mill also claimed that Marathon could switch to a free-to-play model as early as December.
Bungie has not yet commented on that claim, so it remains unconfirmed. When one pillar of a leak falls, the rest usually loses credibility.
Bungie Is Unusually Clear
Nardin, who has worked on both franchises, publicly confirmed that the alleged merger is false. Although Destiny and Marathon share much of Bungie’s DNA, they will remain separate brands.
She also urged fans not to believe everything they read online. Such a direct statement is unusual for Bungie; studios typically ignore rumors and alleged leaks entirely. The fact that a creative director felt compelled to deny a specific part of the rumor suggests it generated significant community attention.
However, the rumor went much further
The leak contained more than just the Destiny claim; it outlined numerous future plans for Marathon, including an alleged switch to free-to-play in December 2026.
It also promised new PvE and PvP modes, deeper story ties, and sweeping changes to the game’s long-term structure. Some details seemed plausible because they matched Bungie’s public timeline. Bungie has since confirmed that Marathon will receive a major overhaul in December.
The December overhaul itself is real
However, the December 8 overhaul is not in doubt: Bungie has officially announced the Symbiosis Update, which will add a permanent PvE mode, a social space with a shooting range, an extra Runner, and an experimental Team Deathmatch mode.
At the same time, the studio is moving away from the previously strict seasonal system. Bungie wants to release major content more flexibly in the future and respond more strongly to player feedback. This development is fundamentally in line with a game that has been struggling since launch.
Marathon Lost Many Players After Launch
Just weeks after launch, we reported that Marathon was bleeding players. Its Steam peak plummeted from over 88,000 concurrent players to fewer than 21,000 within a few weeks.
In our PS5 review of Marathon, we noted that while Bungie’s shooter features strong gunplay, it needs significantly more content and long-term motivation. That’s exactly where Symbiosis comes in. A switch to free-to-play would therefore make sense, at least from a business perspective. However, Bungie has not confirmed this.
What Does This Denial Mean for Free-to-Play?
First, it undermines the rumor. When multiple claims come from the same alleged source and Bungie labels one of them false, the rest deserve greater scrutiny as well. It would be wrong to interpret Bungie’s silence on the free-to-play issue as indirect confirmation.
After all, companies do not automatically deny every false detail of a sweeping rumor. At the same time, it is striking that Nardin limits her statement very precisely to the alleged merger of Destiny and Marathon. We don’t know if that has any significance for the remaining statements.
Free-to-play remains just a rumor for now
This primarily changes the landscape of the sources. A free version of Marathon in December remains possible, but following the latest denial, it has no stronger basis than before. Bungie has merely confirmed that the game will receive a major expansion in December.
The studio has not announced that it will eliminate the purchase price. Readers should therefore distinguish between two points: the major Marathon overhaul is real, while free-to-play remains unconfirmed.
If Bungie is preparing such a fundamental change, we can expect an official announcement no later than the Symbiosis update on December 8. Until then, this denial reminds us that even detailed leaks can include fabrications. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
