Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 gives premium-edition buyers perks in DMZ mode.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has officially launched, and one decision is already sparking debate among players. Buyers of the pricier Vault Edition receive extra gear and an additional Active Duty slot in the popular Extraction mode, DMZ. Unlike standard operator skins or cosmetic extras, these items serve a practical in-game purpose. The question, therefore, is whether Activision is crossing the line between additional content and gameplay advantages with such purchase incentives.

The Vault Edition offers more than cosmetic content.

With the game’s launch on October 23, 2026, the DMZ Deployment Bonus is also available.

This add-on pack is exclusive to the Vault Edition and targets players who intend to play the DMZ Extraction mode regularly. In this mode, players compete alone or with a team on a large open map, collect gear, and then try to extract it safely.

Those who fail may lose important items. The Deployment Bonus addresses this risk by giving Vault Edition owners extra resources that make getting started easier. Activision announced the bonus back in May but did not publish a complete list of included items at the time. The specific contents are now known.

Here is the gear Vault Edition buyers will get:

According to official information from Activision, the Deployment Bonus includes the following items:

  • An additional Active Duty slot
  • Two Weapon Insurance Contracts
  • Two Operator beacons
  • Two Fulton drop markers
  • Two medium backpacks
  • Two plate carriers, each with two armor plates

Each item serves a distinct purpose in DMZ mode. Backpacks let you carry extra gear, body armor carriers boost protection, and weapon insurance plus rescue gear help reduce mission risks.

The extra Active Duty slot also broadens loadout options. Together, these features give the Vault Edition practical advantages beyond cosmetics.

Is this already “pay-to-win”?

In extraction shooters, a level playing field is crucial. Players normally earn gear, weigh risks, and choose mission loadouts. A purchased add-on pack can shift that starting line.

Players who start with extra backpacks, vests, and other gear don’t need to earn those items through normal gameplay at first, which can help in the opening missions. However, the label “pay-to-win” does not automatically apply.

According to Insider Gaming, the included gear is awarded only once, so it does not provide a permanent supply of new backpacks or body armor after each loss. The items themselves do not guarantee victory; a player with better gear can still be eliminated and lose their resources.

The extra Active Duty slot, however, is a distinct component of the edition. It expands the pool of available operator slots and is not a one-time consumable. The real debate, therefore, should focus on how significant these extra options are compared with the Standard Edition.

An Important Difference from Classic Multiplayer

In Modern Warfare 4’s regular multiplayer, success hinges on weapon balance, map knowledge, and personal skill. DMZ, however, emphasizes collected resources and mission preparation. Losing high-value gear is especially frustrating.

Players who already own extra items or can more easily replace lost gear may start with an advantage. That’s why paid gear packs in extraction shooters face stricter scrutiny than standard cosmetic add-ons. In Modern Warfare 4, DMZ pits players against both AI and human opponents.

As a result, gear disparities can directly affect in-match encounters. However, it remains to be seen whether the Deployment Bonus provides a noticeable advantage in practice, as no concrete studies or reliable comparative data on its actual effectiveness are available yet.

Players can also purchase the bonus later

Another notable feature: The Deployment Bonus is not exclusive to pre-order customers.

According to Insider Gaming, players who upgrade to the Vault Edition after launch will also unlock it. Activision offers the upgrade through the in-game Call of Duty Store or each platform’s storefront, so anyone who started with the Standard Edition can later switch to the pricier option.

The bonus will then be credited to the account. According to the report, players may choose to unlock the one-time items only when needed, though this depends on individual usage and in-game storage limits. The purchase does not entitle players to replace lost consumables.

Activision continues to focus on paid expansion editions

The Vault Edition is part of a broad suite of premium content for Modern Warfare 4. Alongside the Deployment Bonus, it bundles multiple Operator packs, weapon blueprints, and a season of the paid BlackCell subscription. Such editions have become standard for major multiplayer shooters.

Typically, such editions center on cosmetics, early unlocks, or extra rewards. Because the DMZ Deployment Bonus also includes in-game-mode items, the debate over the premium edition’s value is especially interesting.

To evaluate this, it’s crucial to distinguish between a one-time head start and a permanently purchased competitive advantage. The Deployment Bonus contains both in different forms: additional consumables and an extra Active Duty slot. Whether the community accepts this combination or perceives it as unfair will become clear as players gain more experience.

How fair is the new DMZ mode?

With the launch of Modern Warfare 4, many new features are taking center stage. Alongside the campaign and classic multiplayer, the return of DMZ is one of the game’s most important components. This mode, in particular, must maintain a long-term balance between risk, rewards, and diverse playstyles. Paid add-ons can quickly become a topic of debate.

One equipment pack alone does not put non-Vault players at a fundamental disadvantage, but the inclusion of purchasable items in a competitive Extraction mode still sparks debate.

Activision has now outlined the scope of the Deployment Bonus, but its actual impact on gameplay will become clear only in the coming days. That leaves players with a decision: Does the standard version of Modern Warfare 4 suffice, or does the extra DMZ content in the Vault Edition provide real value?
