You can now explore Vienna from the comfort of your own sofa. ViewApp has released the comprehensive Vienna Expansion for City Transport Simulator 2026, transporting players to the Austrian capital. Instead of cruising the streets in a sports car or on foot, you’ll take the wheel of a streetcar or public bus. The team recreated more than 1,000 buildings from real-world models, underscoring the scope of the project.
The expansion launched on October 13, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Instead of a fully open city, it offers select real-world routes with authentic vehicles, famous landmarks, and custom traffic.
Vienna becomes the game’s setting for the first time
Until now, City Transport Simulator 2026 has been set primarily in the fictional city of Tramau. With the Vienna Expansion, the developers are leaving this setting for the first time to focus on a real-life European metropolis.
The team chose Vienna, whose dense public transit network and iconic trams make it ideal for the simulation. Three real-world lines anchor the expansion. Players can operate tram line 37 between Schottentor and Hohe Warte or line 38, which also departs from Schottentor and travels to Grinzing.
Bus fans can instead drive Line 35A from Spittelau to Salmannsdorf. Each route offers different vehicles, surroundings, and traffic patterns, moving from dense city blocks to narrow streets and quieter neighborhoods for varied drives.
The team recreated more than 1,000 buildings
The team reports that more than 1,000 buildings were recreated from real-world models for the new map.
Street layouts, transit stops, famous landmarks, and other details make Vienna instantly recognizable. The team used their own photos and geodata as references. Road traffic and pedestrians also appear in the sim. However, not every district is drivable.
The expansion focuses on those routes and their immediate surroundings. That approach makes sense for a traffic simulator, because map size matters less than accurate stops, realistic street layouts, and vehicles that handle as realistically as possible.
Viennese trams and buses are also included
In keeping with the city’s character, players get several vehicles modeled after Vienna’s actual public transit system. These include the ULF A and ULF B low-floor trams. Two variants of the Mercedes-Benz Citaro C2 are also included: a standard route bus and an articulated bus.
Each vehicle offers a detailed driver’s cab, operable controls, and authentic sounds, and the distinctive Wiener Linien livery is faithfully reproduced. For public-transport fans, that sense of recognition will be a key part of the experience.
After all, it makes a difference whether you’re driving just any bus through some random city or operating a familiar vehicle on a real-world route. However, the announcement alone doesn’t provide enough information to fully assess how accurately the handling, braking, and all controls have been implemented. That would require a detailed hands-on test.
Even night bus rides through Vienna are possible
The expansion isn’t limited to daytime trips. Players can also drive the N35 night bus line between Nußdorfer Straße and Salmannsdorf. The game adjusts lighting, traffic, and passenger volume to match the nighttime environment.
Lighter traffic, quieter stops, and longer headways create a different atmosphere.
These small differences could make the driving experience more varied. Daytime operations focus on normal routes and heavy traffic, while nighttime presents different conditions. The developers aim to show that the same city feels very different at various times of day.
The team has also recreated a real Vienna tram depot
Another standout feature is the Gürtel Depot, a real Vienna tram depot recreated in-game at a 1:1 scale. The site spans roughly two hectares and includes multiple halls, tracks, and operational buildings.
To bring it to life, the team used their own photos, maps, and additional local footage. Local employees also supplied detailed images to refine the virtual recreation.
Such dedication underscores the extensive research behind what seems like a small sim project. Unlike a classic open-world game, the goal is to recreate familiar locations with utmost fidelity. Anyone who knows the real streets and transit facilities will likely spot countless details.
Free Improvements for All Players
Alongside the new expansion, the team has released Update 2026.3.0. The update is free for all owners of City Transport Simulator 2026. It brings improvements to vehicles, controls, and graphics.
The team tweaked individual tram sounds, fine-tuned visuals, and strengthened steering-wheel support. They also added earlier stop announcements, improved passenger distribution across doors, and overhauled the lighting system with extra graphics options.
The team also fixed several bugs related to doors, fogged windows, and vehicle functions, so even players who skip the Vienna expansion will enjoy the update.
How much does the new Vienna expansion cost?
The Vienna Expansion costs €49.99. If you don’t yet own the base game, you can opt for the City Transport Simulator 2026 Vienna Edition instead. This bundle includes the base game and the new expansion for €69.99. Season Pass owners receive the Vienna Expansion without an additional purchase.
The content is available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, so the expansion appeals to both simulation fans and console players seeking something different. However, the price isn’t exactly low for an additional map.
Whether the purchase is worth it depends on how much you want to drive the provided routes and how important authentic gameplay is to you.
An Unusual PS5 Game with Great Attention to Detail
City Transport Simulator 2026 rarely makes headlines, so the Vienna expansion stands out.
Rather than promising ever-larger fantasy worlds or flashier action, the developers focus on the mundane: real bus routes, trams, and the public transit network of a famous European capital. More than 1,000 recreated buildings, true-to-life vehicles, and a detailed tram depot showcase the team’s effort.
Players familiar with Vienna or transportation simulations may find it especially appealing. The Vienna Expansion launched for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on October 13. Let us know what you think in the comments.
