The gaming industry continues to move toward an increasingly digital future, but a new report suggests that Sony, Microsoft, and major publishers may not be the only forces driving that transition. The manufacturing infrastructure required to produce optical disc drives could itself be becoming a problem.
Sony has already announced plans to stop producing physical discs for newly released PlayStation games beginning in January 2028. While that decision has primarily been linked to changing consumer buying habits, another development may now be accelerating the decline of physical media.
According to Windows Central’s Jez Corden, the supply chain responsible for producing optical drive components is increasingly beginning to break down.

Manufacturers are reportedly moving away from optical drives
Corden says the information comes from his own sources within the Xbox hardware space.
According to those sources, factories and production lines that previously manufactured components for optical disc drives are increasingly shifting their capacity toward other products.
Corden specifically mentions camera lenses and other business areas that are now considered more attractive and easier for manufacturers to scale.
The underlying problem is relatively straightforward: outside the console market, demand for optical drives has been declining for years.
Modern laptops are almost universally sold without disc drives, traditional Blu-ray players represent a much smaller market than they once did, and internal optical drives are no longer standard equipment in desktop PCs.
According to Corden, a significant portion of the remaining demand for optical drives now comes from the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
PlayStation may only be the beginning
The report provides an interesting additional perspective on Sony’s decision to move away from new physical PlayStation releases beginning in 2028.
Until now, much of the discussion has focused on whether Sony is abandoning physical games primarily for financial reasons. Lower manufacturing and distribution costs, potentially higher margins on digital purchases, and the growing importance of the PlayStation Store are likely to remain significant factors.
But if the industrial infrastructure behind optical drives is shrinking at the same time, future console manufacturers could find it increasingly difficult—or simply more expensive—to produce disc drives in the massive quantities required for a new hardware generation.
That becomes particularly interesting when looking ahead to the PlayStation 6.
Sony has yet to officially explain how its next-generation PlayStation will handle physical media. However, with new PlayStation games already scheduled to move away from discs in 2028, a traditional built-in optical drive may become increasingly difficult to justify.
There is no immediate shortage of PS5 disc drives
There is an important distinction to make with the current report.
Corden is describing a shrinking or potentially collapsing supply chain. That does not mean PS5 disc drives can suddenly no longer be manufactured or that existing drives are about to disappear from stores.
There has also been no official announcement from Sony or a major optical drive manufacturer confirming an immediate end to production.
Instead, the report highlights how the transition toward digital games may eventually become about much more than decisions made by individual platform holders.
If fewer industries require optical drives and manufacturers continue shifting production capacity toward more profitable technologies, maintaining the infrastructure necessary for physical game media could become increasingly difficult.
In that scenario, the decline of the traditional game disc could eventually begin accelerating on its own.
And for players who still prefer physical games, that possibility is unlikely to be welcome news.
