Sony Confirms 82% of All PlayStation Game Sales Are Now Digital

The shift toward digital game purchases continues to accelerate. In its latest financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed that 82% of all PlayStation game sales are now made digitally.

That leaves just 18% of sales coming from physical copies, highlighting how dramatically player buying habits have changed over the past few years.

Digital sales reach a new record

Sony’s latest figures show that digital purchases now overwhelmingly dominate the PlayStation ecosystem.

The reported numbers include a wide range of digital transactions across the platform, including full game downloads, downloadable content (DLC), microtransactions, and other digital purchases.

For comparison, digital sales accounted for 78% of PlayStation software revenue across the entire 2025 fiscal year. The jump to 82% marks the highest digital share Sony has reported to date.

The numbers help explain Sony’s strategy

The latest figures also provide context for Sony’s recently announced long-term plans.

The company has confirmed that it intends to stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs beginning in 2028, a decision that sparked widespread debate across the gaming community.

PlayStation Fans Call for Week-Long Boycott Following Sony’s Physical Games Decision

Many fans criticized the move and called for physical media to remain available, while others even organized a temporary PlayStation boycott in protest.

Despite the backlash, Sony’s latest sales data suggests that the vast majority of PlayStation customers have already embraced digital purchasing.

The debate over physical games continues

Even with digital sales reaching record levels, the discussion surrounding physical media is far from over.

Supporters of physical editions continue to point to benefits such as game preservation, collecting, and the ability to resell used copies.

On the other hand, digital buyers often highlight instant downloads, the convenience of not swapping discs, automatic game libraries, and frequent discounts available through digital storefronts.

The industry itself remains divided, with some publishers fully embracing an all-digital future while others argue that physical editions should remain available as long as consumer demand exists.

A trend that’s been building for years

The latest milestone is part of a much broader trend that has been developing across multiple console generations.

With each new generation of hardware, digital sales have steadily increased, and Sony’s latest report shows that the transition is continuing at an even faster pace.

The new 82% figure represents the highest officially reported digital sales share in PlayStation history and reflects the ongoing transformation of the gaming market.

Our take

Sony’s latest financial results leave little doubt that digital purchasing has become the preferred option for most PlayStation players.

At the same time, the debate surrounding physical media is unlikely to disappear anytime soon. Collectors, preservation advocates, and many longtime fans still value the ownership, flexibility, and longevity that physical game discs provide.
