Sony and Guerrilla Games have yet to officially announce Horizon 3, but many fans believe Aloy’s next adventure is already in development. One of the biggest questions surrounding the game is whether it will still launch on PlayStation 5 or become one of the first major titles for the rumored PlayStation 6.
While there is no official confirmation at this point, several factors suggest that Horizon 3 could arrive alongside Sony’s next console generation.
Longer development cycles point to a later launch
Modern AAA games take significantly longer to develop than they did just a few years ago, and the Horizon series is no exception.
Horizon Zero Dawn launched in 2017, followed by Horizon Forbidden West in 2022. Since then, Guerrilla Games has been working on multiple projects, including the Horizon multiplayer title while also supporting other PlayStation productions.
If Horizon 3 is already in development, a release before late 2027 appears unlikely. Interestingly, that timeframe also aligns with industry expectations for Sony’s next-generation PlayStation console.
Could Horizon 3 launch on both PS5 and PS6?
At this stage, it is impossible to say which platforms Horizon 3 will support.
One possibility is a cross-generation release. Sony has already launched several major first-party games across two console generations, allowing more players to experience its biggest franchises during the transition to new hardware.
On the other hand, Guerrilla Games could decide to make Horizon 3 a full PlayStation 6 exclusive. Developing exclusively for next-generation hardware would give the studio greater freedom when it comes to graphics, world design, artificial intelligence, and gameplay systems.
For now, however, no official platform details have been announced.
What advantages could PlayStation 6 offer?
Horizon Forbidden West is already considered one of the most visually impressive games available on PlayStation 5. A move to more powerful hardware could allow Guerrilla Games to raise the bar even further.
Potential improvements could include larger open worlds, more machines appearing simultaneously, faster loading times, enhanced lighting and weather effects, more detailed animations, and larger settlements populated with significantly more NPCs.
It is important to note that these are expectations based on technological progress rather than confirmed features.
Nemesis could lead to the biggest conflict in the series
The story also supports the idea of a larger-scale sequel.
The ending of Horizon Forbidden West introduced Nemesis, a new threat that appears to surpass anything Aloy has faced before. Many fans expect the next game to feature larger battles, new machine types, and an even more expansive world.
If Guerrilla Games intends to realize that vision, next-generation hardware could provide the technical foundation needed to bring it to life.
When could Horizon 3 be released?
Sony has not announced a release window for Horizon 3, making any launch predictions purely speculative.
Based on current development timelines, many industry observers consider late 2027, 2028, or even 2029 to be the most realistic release window. A launch within the next year or two appears considerably less likely.
Until Sony and Guerrilla Games officially reveal the game, however, all release expectations should be treated as speculation.
