It’s Time for a New Killzone

For years, one question has continued to surface within the PlayStation community: Will Killzone ever return? Although Sony has left the iconic first-person shooter franchise dormant for more than a decade, many fans are still hoping for a comeback. While there are currently no concrete rumors pointing to a new installment, several developments suggest that the timing may be better than ever.

A Franchise That Has Been Silent Since Shadow Fall

The last mainline entry, Killzone: Shadow Fall, launched alongside the PlayStation 4 in 2013. Since then, Guerrilla Games has shifted its full attention to the highly successful Horizon franchise.

Over the years, the studio has acknowledged the importance of Killzone but has consistently focused on newer projects instead. As a result, one of PlayStation’s biggest shooter franchises has remained inactive.

PlayStation Is Missing a First-Party Shooter

Sony has built an impressive lineup of exclusive franchises, including God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, The Last of Us, Horizon, and Ghost of Tsushima. However, one noticeable gap remains: a major first-party first-person shooter.

With Killzone and Resistance absent for years and several multiplayer projects canceled, PlayStation currently lacks a flagship FPS series capable of competing with franchises such as Call of Duty, Battlefield, Halo, or DOOM.

A modern Killzone could fill that void while offering Sony another major exclusive to strengthen its first-party portfolio.

Fans Have Never Stopped Asking

Despite the long silence, Killzone continues to trend regularly across social media, Reddit, and PlayStation communities. Many players would welcome a full remake or remastered collection of the original trilogy, while others are hoping for an entirely new entry built specifically for modern hardware.

A Reboot Could Be the Right Direction

If Sony decides to revive Killzone, a complete reboot may make the most sense.

The PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro would allow the series to deliver larger battlefields, more advanced AI, improved destruction systems, and visually stunning recreations of the Helghast conflict. Combined with modern multiplayer features and cinematic storytelling, Killzone could return as a fresh take on PlayStation’s military sci-fi universe.

Whether Guerrilla Games would develop such a project remains uncertain, however. With the studio heavily invested in Horizon, Sony could also choose to hand the franchise to another first-party team.

No Reliable Evidence Yet

As exciting as the idea sounds, it’s important to separate hope from fact.

At the time of writing, Sony has not announced a new Killzone, and no credible insider has reported that a new game is currently in development. Any discussion about a revival remains purely speculative.

Still, from a strategic perspective, bringing Killzone back would make sense. A strong first-party shooter is one of the few genres currently missing from PlayStation Studios‘ lineup, and Killzone remains one of Sony’s most recognizable dormant IPs.

Whether that return happens this generation or with PlayStation 6 remains to be seen, but many fans believe the time is finally right.

What do you think? Would you like to see Killzone return?
