Rockstar Games has officially announced that Grand Theft Auto 5 players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will soon be able to upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions for free.
The upgrade becomes available on June 18, 2026, marking a major change from Rockstar’s previous approach when the enhanced editions launched in 2022 as separate purchases.
Free Upgrade for Existing Owners
When GTA 5 first arrived on current-generation consoles, players who already owned the game on PS4 or Xbox One had to buy the upgraded version separately.
That is now changing.
Beginning this week, existing owners will be able to move to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition at no additional cost.
Keep Your Progress
Rockstar has also confirmed that players can transfer all of their progress to the upgraded version.
This includes:
- Story Mode save data
- GTA Online characters
- Vehicles and properties
- In-game progression
- Purchased content
Players will be able to continue exactly where they left off.
Enhanced Performance and Features
The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions offer a variety of improvements over the last-generation editions, including:
- Higher resolutions
- Faster loading times
- Improved frame rates
- Enhanced visual settings
- Better overall performance
- Exclusive GTA Online enhancements
These upgrades make the current-gen version the definitive way to experience Los Santos.
Arriving Ahead of GTA 6
Officially, Rockstar says the move comes ahead of the upcoming Kortz Center Heist update for GTA Online, which launches in July.
However, many fans believe the timing is also connected to the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6.
With GTA 6 scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, Rockstar may be giving longtime players one final reason to revisit GTA 5 before the next chapter begins.
GTA 5’s Incredible Legacy Continues
More than twelve years after its original release, GTA 5 remains one of the most successful games ever made.
By making the next-gen upgrade free, Rockstar is ensuring that even more players can enjoy the game’s best console version without paying extra.
Looking Ahead to GTA 6
While GTA 5 continues to receive support, excitement is rapidly building for GTA 6.
Rockstar remains committed to the November 19 release date, and many fans expect the company’s major marketing campaign — including a potential Trailer 3 reveal — to begin very soon.
