GameStop is causing a stir in the U.S. with its reportedly planned prices for used PlayStation 5 Pro consoles. According to a purported internal memo, a used PS5 Pro is set to cost $1,399.99 in the future. With a pre-installed disc drive, the price reportedly rises to as much as $1,499.99. GameStop has not yet officially confirmed the change. The document first appeared on the GameStop subreddit and other accounts and media outlets subsequently shared it. According to the memo, the new prices are set to take effect on October 16, 2026.
If accurate, GameStop would charge more for a used PS5 Pro than Sony charges for a new one, which currently carries a suggested retail price of $899.99.
Used PS5 Pro Supposedly Intended to Be More Expensive
One sentence in the alleged memo stands out: it explicitly directs GameStop to price used units higher than new ones and states that this markup is intentional. The all-digital model without a retrofitted disc drive is listed at $1,399.99. The document says a used PS5 Pro with a disc drive will cost $1,499.99. There is no standalone physical PS5 Pro; Sony sells the console without a disc drive, which users can buy separately and attach. GameStop will likely list such units as a distinct variant.
Buyback prices are also set to rise, with the document quoting $800–$850 for a used PS5 Pro. The exact payout will depend on the console’s condition, accessories, and the seller’s GameStop membership status.
The document’s authenticity remains unconfirmed.
Caution is still advised regarding this report. GameStop has neither announced the new prices through its official channels nor confirmed them to the media.
The Reddit post also shows an odd date reference: it calls October 16 “tomorrow,” even though the image first appeared on October 5. That could be a simple memo error, but it understandably fuels doubts about the document’s authenticity.
The deal account Nintendeal considers the information credible and shared the document, but that does not replace independent confirmation. By October 16 at the latest, we should be able to verify whether GameStop is actually adjusting its prices. The report pertains only to the U.S. market, so no price changes for Germany or other European countries can be inferred.
The PS5 Pro Is Hard to Find in Many Places
This potential move comes amid an unusual market situation. The PS5 Pro has been in short supply at various U.S. retailers for weeks. New shipments often sell out quickly, while third-party sellers and resellers are charging significantly higher prices. The situation has also worsened recently in Germany. As we previously reported, the PS5 Pro was being offered for up to €1,400 in some cases ahead of the release of GTA 6. However, these are primarily offers from third-party retailers and not a new official price increase by Sony. If the leaked letter is authentic, GameStop would be the first major retail chain to specifically offer used consoles at a similarly high price point.
The markup compared to Sony’s U.S. suggested retail price would be substantial. A used PS5 Pro without a disc drive would cost about $500 more than a new console at the official price. With a disc drive, the difference would be as high as $600—though the separately available disc drive must also be factored in for a fair comparison.
Does the upcoming GTA 6 release play a role?
The document gives no reason for the alleged price change, but the timing suggests it may stem from current high demand and limited supply. GTA 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, and could prompt many gamers to reconsider buying a current-generation console. Rockstar’s new open-world game is officially labeled “PS5 Pro Enhanced,” putting the more powerful console in the spotlight. However, there is no evidence that GTA 6 alone causes the shortages. Higher production costs, strained supply chains, and scarce hardware components also affect availability.
GameStop may also be using these unusual prices to prevent retailers or private resellers from buying up the few used consoles available and immediately reselling them at a profit. From the customer’s perspective, this does little to change the fact that $1,399 or $1,499 for a used console would be exceptionally high.
Buyers should not rush into a purchase
Even if GameStop does introduce the prices mentioned, customers don’t have to pay them. The PS5 Pro remains a regularly produced console model, not a limited-edition collector’s item.
New inventory could drop at any time through PlayStation Direct or other retailers, so shoppers should compare prices and availability rather than paying a premium out of GTA 6 anxiety.
For now, the GameStop price change remains unconfirmed, based on a purported internal document. Whether used PS5 Pro consoles will actually cost up to $1,499.99 starting October 16 should become clear in the coming days. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
