Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still in active development, according to a new statement from Rik Godwin, Lead Writer and Associate Narrative Director at Ubisoft Bordeaux. The writer has supported the long-awaited space adventure for several months, yet there is still no release date or new presentation.
While this update is far less substantial than a trailer or a detailed development briefing, the confirmation of a writer’s involvement is notable after the long period of silence surrounding the project. Godwin also explained that he verified he was permitted to speak publicly about his involvement before releasing his statement.
Assassin’s Creed Writer Supports the Project
Godwin is not assigned exclusively to Beyond Good and Evil 2; he also works on Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Ghost Recon. On the space project, he provides support or advice, though the scope and specific plot areas he oversees remain unclear. His comment still indicates that Ubisoft continues to assign staff to the game’s narrative. That distinction matters: a project can remain active without visible full-scale production. An experienced writer’s participation is a more concrete sign of life, but it does not prove that completion or a reveal is imminent.
Earlier this year, Creative Director Fawzi Mesmar said the then-ongoing changes at Ubisoft had no impact on his team or the game. You can find more about that statement in our report on the unchanged development status of Beyond Good and Evil 2.
A Development Project with an Exceptionally Long History
Beyond Good and Evil 2 was first announced in 2008. Ubisoft stayed silent for years, then reintroduced the game at E3 2017. A more detailed gameplay demo followed in 2018, and updates have been sporadic since. The lengthy development does not imply uninterrupted production. Concepts, key personnel, and internal priorities have changed repeatedly over the years, so the current build likely differs significantly from the original plans. Ubisoft still describes Beyond Good and Evil 2 as an action-adventure RPG and a prequel to the first game. Players will explore the System 3, travel between planets and through space, and grow from an obscure pirate into a renowned figure.
According to the still-accessible official project page, players can enjoy the adventure solo or in co-op. After such a long silence, however, it’s unclear whether every feature listed there still matches the current build.
The game survived Ubisoft’s recent cutbacks
This new sign of life is significant because Ubisoft has significantly restructured its internal operations and revamped its game portfolio. The publisher canceled several productions, postponed others, and reevaluated many more. Among the most prominent cancellations was the long-in-development remake of *Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time*. The fact that *Beyond Good and Evil 2*—of all things—remains in development despite its considerably longer history has naturally raised questions.
In January, Ubisoft told Insider Gaming that *Beyond Good and Evil 2* remains in active development and called it a key title in its open-world strategy. That statement could have merely reflected the game’s internal status, but Godwin’s latest confirmation shows that the team has made tangible progress in recent months.
Platforms and Release Date Still Unannounced
Despite this update, key details remain unclear. Ubisoft has not announced a release window or target platforms. No recent gameplay footage has surfaced, and the 2017 and 2018 presentations are now outdated. After many years in development, Ubisoft may have overhauled the game’s technology, systems, and scope. A PlayStation 5 release remains unconfirmed, and the console’s advanced age, combined with the unclear timeline, raises the possibility of a shift to later hardware, though no evidence supports that idea.
The latest personnel announcement should also be viewed cautiously: a supporting writer could be involved in a single revision or work with the main team for an extended period, so the move offers no firm clues about team size or development progress.
The next real update needs to reveal more
On the surface, the news is encouraging for fans: Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still in development and not merely listed in Ubisoft’s old project overviews. The team has recently worked on the narrative.
After so many years, another brief status update alone will hardly be enough to answer the outstanding questions. The next major update would need to show which parts of the original vision have been preserved and how Ubisoft plans to shape this unusually long-running project into a release-ready game.
Until then, Beyond Good and Evil 2 remains one of Ubisoft’s most enigmatic projects. This new sign of life confirms that work continues, but it is not yet an announcement of an imminent return to the big stage. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
