More than 16 years after the original *Brütal Legend*, there is finally a concrete—if unlikely—path to a sequel. As part of its new Kickstarter campaign, Double Fine Productions says *Brütal Legend 2* will go into production if funding reaches an almost unbelievable $100 million. The studio has confirmed that, if the money comes in, the sequel will be made.
The chances of that happening, however, are extremely slim.
The actual Kickstarter seeks a far more modest sum for a new Amnesia Fortnight, the studio’s tradition of turning unusual ideas into playable prototypes in two weeks.

Brütal Legend 2 was simply added as a massive stretch goal.
Predictably, that detail is drawing the most attention.
Double Fine insists the $100 million pledge is genuine.
On Kickstarter, the studio has now directly addressed the obvious question: would Double Fine really develop Brütal Legend 2 if the campaign somehow reached $100 million?
The studio insists it is serious.
If the campaign hits that mark, Brütal Legend 2 will go into production.
At the same time, Double Fine openly acknowledges just how unrealistic that goal is. According to the studio, even the most successful Kickstarter campaign to date raised only about $46 million.
That would require more than twice the current Kickstarter record.
The $100 million stretch goal is still very much in keeping with the studio’s sense of humor.
This time, however, there is a serious promise behind the joke.
The sequel is not officially in development unless the extraordinary funding goal is met.
The Kickstarter campaign is actually about completely different games
The campaign, called Amnesia Fortnight 2026 Indie Reboot, revives a long-standing Double Fine tradition.
The tradition began in 2007.
During the event, Double Fine pauses regular development so team members can pitch unusual game concepts. The team then turns the chosen ideas into playable prototypes in just a few weeks.
This time, Kickstarter backers will participate directly.
Double Fine has presented 26 game ideas, and supporters will first vote for their three favorites.
The team will turn four of those concepts into prototypes over the following two weeks. Backers will vote again, and the winner will receive extra development time before launching as a small standalone game.
Double Fine plans to publish these smaller projects under its new Double Fine Action Labs label.

This Kickstarter campaign is particularly important for Double Fine
There’s also a more serious story behind this unusual crowdfunding campaign.
Double Fine became an independent studio again in July 2026, ending its seven-year period under Xbox and Microsoft.
Most importantly for the studio’s future, Double Fine has regained the rights to its games.
As a result, the studio can now control its older franchises, including Brütal Legend.
Double Fine says the revenue will help it develop new games, pursue new projects, and stay sustainable as an independent company.
Every dollar raised through Kickstarter now goes directly to the studio.
Crowdfunding is familiar ground for Double Fine.
Back in 2012, the studio launched one of gaming’s earliest major Kickstarter success stories with a project originally known as Double Fine Adventure.
That project eventually became *Broken Age*.
Double Fine initially asked for $400,000 but ultimately raised more than $3.3 million from over 87,000 supporters.
Psychonauts 2 was also partially funded through crowdfunding several years later.
Fans have been asking for Brütal Legend 2 for years.
That explains why Double Fine picked Brütal Legend for its absurdly ambitious stretch goal.
The original game launched on October 13, 2009, for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 before later coming to PC, macOS, and Linux.
The story follows roadie Eddie Riggs, voiced by Jack Black, who gets transported to a fantasy realm inspired by heavy metal.
It blends action, open environments, vehicles, and strategy into a unique experience.
That blend was divisive.
Many players loved the world, humor, characters, and soundtrack, but some were surprised by the increasingly prominent strategy mechanics that appeared later in the game.
Double Fine now calls Brütal Legend one of its most successful games.
To mark the game’s 15th anniversary, the studio also revealed that questions about a sequel are among the most common messages it receives from fans.
Studio founder Tim Schafer has even discussed what a second game might look like.
Interestingly, he wouldn’t necessarily remove the strategy elements.
In 2024, he noted that some fans want Double Fine to expand the real-time strategy side of Brütal Legend, while others ask for a God of War–style action game starring Eddie Riggs.
Schafer said he finds the idea of expanding the strategy elements more intriguing.
At the time, however, there was no sequel in active development.
Double Fine explicitly confirmed in late 2024 that Brütal Legend 2 was not in production.
The chances are still incredibly slim
The new Kickstarter campaign hasn’t changed that—at least not yet.
Raising $100 million through a single crowdfunding campaign would be an unprecedented achievement.
Double Fine calls the sum an extreme stretch goal and openly acknowledges how unlikely it is to materialize.
Even so, the current situation is more intriguing than earlier hints about a sequel.
Double Fine is independent again, has regained control of its games following its separation from Xbox, and has now publicly stated a specific condition under which Brütal Legend 2 would actually go into production.
Even if the $100 million target is never reached—as almost everyone probably expects—the campaign at least demonstrates that Brütal Legend hasn’t been forgotten within the studio.
Double Fine said in 2024 that staff were still thinking about returning to its strange heavy-metal universe.
Now that the studio is independent again, it has more freedom to make that decision than it did just a few months ago.
Whether Brütal Legend 2 becomes reality may depend less on this nearly impossible Kickstarter goal and more on Double Fine securing the right financing partner for a larger project.
For now, Brütal Legend 2 remains an extraordinary promise with an equally extraordinary price tag.
