Ubisoft is facing growing criticism following reports of planned layoffs at its Ubisoft Barcelona studio. According to multiple reports, 51 employees who contributed to Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced are set to lose their jobs, while concerns have also been raised about the severance packages being offered.
The company has not publicly responded to the allegations.
Reports Claim Severance Packages Fall Below Expectations
According to a report from IGN, union representatives argue that Ubisoft’s proposed compensation is significantly below industry expectations. They also claim the severance packages are less generous than those offered during previous rounds of layoffs at the studio.
The situation has reportedly prompted current employees to join affected colleagues in protest, calling for fair compensation and urging Ubisoft to preserve as many jobs as possible.
Success Overshadowed by Layoff Plans
The controversy comes despite what has been described as a strong launch for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. Reports suggest the game has attracted a large player base on Steam while also generating solid sales and microtransaction revenue shortly after release.
Because of that success, many fans and developers have questioned the timing of the layoffs and the treatment of staff who helped create the game.
According to the reports, the Barcelona team contributed to several major aspects of the project, including main story missions, boss encounters, enemy AI, and the Gibara region.
Ubisoft Has Yet to Comment
At the time of writing, Ubisoft has not officially addressed the reported layoffs, the criticism surrounding the severance packages, or the ongoing employee protests.
As a result, the claims should be treated with caution until the company provides an official statement or additional details become available.
