God of War TV Series Loses Its Kratos: Ryan Hurst Recast After On-Set Injury

The upcoming God of War TV series from Prime Video has suffered an unexpected setback. Ryan Hurst, who was officially announced as Kratos earlier this year, will no longer portray the legendary Spartan after reportedly sustaining a serious injury during production.

As a result, Amazon is now expected to recast one of the most iconic characters in gaming.

Serious Injury Forces Recasting

According to multiple reports, Hurst suffered a torn bicep while filming the series. The injury required surgery and is expected to keep the actor out of action for an extended period.

Because Kratos is an extremely physical role, waiting for Hurst to recover would reportedly have caused significant production delays. Instead, the studio has decided to move forward with a complete recast.

Fans Had Welcomed the Casting

When Ryan Hurst was announced as Kratos in January, many fans praised the decision. Best known for his performances in Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, Hurst was widely seen as a strong fit for the role thanks to his commanding presence and experience playing tough, complex characters.

Following the announcement, Hurst shared his excitement on social media, saying he was honored to bring the legendary PlayStation icon to life.

Who Will Play Kratos Now?

At the time of writing, Amazon has not revealed who will replace Hurst as Kratos.

Despite this setback, the company remains highly confident in the project. Prime Video reportedly renewed the series for a second season even before filming on the first season had been completed, highlighting Amazon’s long-term commitment to the adaptation.

Based on the 2018 God of War

The television series is expected to adapt the story of God of War (2018), following Kratos and his son Atreus on their emotional journey through Norse mythology as they attempt to fulfill Faye’s final wish by scattering her ashes from the highest peak in the Nine Realms.

The game is widely regarded as one of PlayStation’s greatest exclusives and serves as the foundation for the live-action adaptation.

Our Take

Ryan Hurst’s departure is undoubtedly an unfortunate setback for the production. However, recasting the role rather than delaying filming for months appears to be the most practical solution.

The biggest question now is who will step into the role of Kratos. With expectations for the series running high, Amazon’s choice of actor could play a major role in shaping fans‘ first impressions.
