PlayStation Is Reportedly Shifting Back Toward Exclusive First Party Single Player Games

PlayStation may be preparing a major change to its multiplatform strategy. According to a new report, Sony is now planning to place a much stronger focus on exclusive first-party single-player titles again, potentially reducing the importance of PC releases for its biggest narrative-driven games.

The move would mark a noticeable shift compared to PlayStation’s strategy over the last few years.

Sony Began Expanding to PC Back in 2020

PlayStation officially started its modern PC strategy in 2020 with the release of Horizon Zero Dawn on Steam.

Since then, multiple former PlayStation exclusives have launched on PC, including:

  • God of War
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man
  • The Last of Us Part I
  • Ghost of Tsushima

Reports suggest the strategy has been financially successful for Sony, with estimates claiming PlayStation generated around $300 million from PC ports over a three-year period.

Herman Hulst Reportedly Confirmed a New Direction

According to a report from Bloomberg, PlayStation CEO Herman Hulst recently stated internally that narrative-focused first-party single-player games will now remain more closely tied to PlayStation platforms.

If accurate, Sony could once again prioritize console exclusivity for some of its biggest franchises.

At the moment, however, PlayStation has not officially announced any specific changes regarding future PC releases.

Steam Hardware Rumors Could Be Influencing Sony

One possible reason behind the reported shift may involve growing speculation surrounding future Steam hardware.

Since Steam-based devices would naturally support the full Steam library, PlayStation titles released on PC could also become playable on competing gaming hardware outside of Sony’s ecosystem.

That possibility may reportedly be encouraging Sony to become more selective with future PC ports.

Many PlayStation Fans Support More Exclusives

The debate surrounding PlayStation exclusivity has remained highly active within the community for years.

Many longtime PlayStation fans have argued that major cinematic single-player experiences should remain strongly associated with PlayStation consoles. Others still support PC releases because of the larger audience and additional revenue opportunities they create.

According to recent community polls, more than 70 percent of surveyed PlayStation users reportedly supported scaling back PC ports.

PC Ports May Continue But More Selectively

Despite the rumors, this likely does not mean PlayStation will completely stop releasing games on PC.

Instead, Sony may simply become more cautious about which titles eventually leave the PlayStation ecosystem and how long those exclusivity windows last.

Narrative-driven first-party franchises appear to be at the center of the reported strategy shift.
