Sony Interactive Entertainment has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit in the United States, resulting in approximately $7.85 million being returned to affected users. The case centers on digital game purchases made through the PlayStation Store between 2019 and 2023 and addresses allegations related to competition and pricing practices.
Who is eligible for a refund
According to the settlement details, users may qualify if they purchased digital games on the PlayStation Store between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023. A key requirement is that the titles were previously available via physical retail vouchers before being bought digitally.
In most cases, eligible users with active PlayStation Network accounts will automatically receive compensation in the form of PlayStation Store credit. Those without active accounts can contact the settlement administrators to arrange alternative payment methods.
Refund amounts will vary
The exact amount each user receives will depend on their individual purchase history. Players who bought multiple qualifying titles may receive higher compensation. Estimates suggest that more than 4.4 million accounts could be eligible.
Affected titles reportedly include major releases such as The Last of Us Part II, God of War collections, LittleBigPlanet 3, and Killzone Shadow Fall.
Background of the lawsuit
The class action lawsuit was originally filed in 2021. It alleged that Sony’s digital distribution model limited competition and may have contributed to higher prices for certain games on the PlayStation Store.
The settlement resolves the case without Sony admitting any wrongdoing.
Final approval still pending
Before refunds are issued, the agreement must be approved by the court. A fairness hearing is scheduled for October 15, 2026. If approved, payments will be distributed shortly afterward.
Separate legal case in the UK
In addition to the U.S. case, Sony is also facing a separate class action lawsuit in the United Kingdom involving similar allegations. That case could potentially result in significantly larger financial consequences depending on its outcome.
A notable case for digital storefronts
This settlement represents one of the more prominent legal cases involving digital game purchases. It highlights increasing scrutiny of platform holders and their pricing and distribution practices.
