Sony is introducing a new age verification system for PlayStation users. In the future, players will need to verify their age if they want to continue using voice chat, messages, and other communication features.
According to Sony, the new requirement is designed to help create safer, age-appropriate experiences for players and families.
Important Features Will Be Restricted Without Verification
Players who do not complete the age verification process will still be able to play games, unlock trophies, access the PlayStation Store, and use PlayStation Plus.
However, several social features will be restricted. These include voice chat, text messages, party chats, group functions, Discord voice chat, and broadcasting features such as Twitch or YouTube streaming. Some in-game chat features may also be affected.
Verification Through Face Scan, Phone, or ID
Sony is reportedly using the service provider Yoti for the age verification process.
Players may be able to confirm their age through a face scan, mobile phone number, or ID document. Sony states that facial data will not be stored permanently. Instead, PlayStation will only receive confirmation that the age check was successfully completed.
Launch Begins in the UK and Ireland
The new age verification system is currently starting with a pilot phase in the UK and Ireland.
Existing accounts in those regions are expected to complete the verification process during 2026. Starting in June 2026, communication features may become unavailable for users who have not verified their age.
It remains unclear when Sony plans to expand the feature to other countries, although a wider rollout appears likely.
Part of Broader Online Safety Measures
The move is likely connected to stricter online safety regulations that are being introduced in several countries.
Other platforms such as Discord and Roblox are also working on similar age verification systems for chat and community features. However, some players have already raised privacy concerns about the new requirement.
