If you start with GTA 6’s Standard Edition, you won’t permanently miss out on the extra content in the pricier Ultimate Edition. Rockstar Games sells a separate upgrade that unlocks the bonus material whenever you’re ready, whether you bought digitally or picked up the boxed copy. However, PlayStation players should note a few differences before they buy.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The German PlayStation Store lists two versions: the Standard Edition for €79.99 and the Ultimate Edition for €99.99.
Players who start with the cheaper option can later buy the extra content without repurchasing the base game.
GTA 6 Upgrade Works Even After Purchase
Rockstar Games confirms in its official support section that the Ultimate Edition upgrade will be offered as standalone digital downloadable content. Standard Edition owners can buy the package through the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store. Rockstar has not specified a time limit for the upgrade.
As a result, players don’t have to decide before launch whether they want every extra. That option appeals to buyers who prefer to play the main campaign first, since it’s hard to judge pre-release how much extra gameplay the Ultimate content provides.
The upgrade is already listed in the German PlayStation Store, though at the time of our review it was still marked as unavailable. The Xbox Store lists a price of €20. The regular price difference between the two full editions is also €20. Whether the same terms will apply when purchasing the upgrade at a later date depends on the respective pricing in the store.
The GTA 6 boxed version can also be upgraded
One special feature concerns the so-called physical version of GTA 6. Unlike traditional console games, the packaging does not contain a game disc. Instead, it includes a digital download code that can be used to download the game from the respective console store. Rockstar has confirmed that buyers of this version can also upgrade to the Ultimate Edition.
First, redeem the included download code; then purchase the upgrade from the same store. A standalone physical Ultimate Edition will not be sold. The boxed version arrives in stores on November 12, so buyers can redeem their code early and download the game before launch.
For PS5, Sony has confirmed that the pre-download window opens on November 10, 2026, at midnight local time. The installation requires about 212 GB of free storage. Anyone who receives the boxed version later must redeem the code before starting the download.
What additional content does the Ultimate Edition offer?
Rockstar is promoting the Ultimate Edition with an extensive collection of additional vehicles, weapons, clothing, and other content, which is said to be spread throughout the story of Jason and Lucia. This includes, among other things, the 1995 Grotti Cheetah, special revolvers, personalized weapon variants, and additional vehicle options. Rockstar also mentions several special shops and establishments within the game world.
Announced extras include Rideout Customs Mod Shop, Sara’s Unisex Salon, Electric Fang Tattoo Parlor, and One-Eyed Willie’s Mod Shop, along with extra vehicles, garages, and furnishings. The bonus content goes beyond cosmetics, adding new locations and in-game services.
However, it is not yet possible to definitively assess how extensive this content will be in the final game or what impact it will have on gameplay. The Standard Edition still includes the regular main game featuring the story of Jason and Lucia.
Pre-order customers receive additional extras
Separate from the Ultimate Edition, Rockstar is offering additional perks to buyers who purchase GTA 6 before November 20, 2026. These include the Vintage Vice City Pack, featuring a classic 1955 Vapid Stanier Sedan, additional outfits, hairstyles, and a special weapon embellishment.
This pack is not exclusive to the Ultimate Edition. Eligible buyers of digital versions can also receive one free month of GTA+. This is Rockstar’s paid subscription service, which may automatically renew after the free period unless canceled in time. Anyone pre-ordering GTA 6 digitally should therefore also take the terms of this offer into account.
Who Should Consider a Later Upgrade?
The option to upgrade later mainly affects pre-order decisions. Players who only want the single-player campaign can start with the Standard Edition. The extra Ultimate content will still be accessible down the road. The upgrade will appeal most to players who want every vehicle, customization option, and feature in Leonida.
Another advantage is that more information about the actual scope of the bonus content is likely to be available after release. However, some questions remain. The additional content must first prove itself in the finished game, so whether it justifies the extra cost depends on personal expectations.
In our detailed comparison of the GTA 6 Standard and Ultimate Editions, we’ve already examined the two versions and their differences. One thing is certain: If you buy GTA 6 for €79.99 initially, you’re not permanently ruling out the Ultimate Edition. Rockstar explicitly offers the option to upgrade later.
