Bungie is completely overhauling *Marathon* and opening up the shooter to players who play exclusively in PvE mode

Bungie is responding to Marathon’s rocky start with a sweeping overhaul. The shooter, which has so far been heavily focused on PvPvE Extraction, will now also offer persistent PvE, classic PvP, and more accessible gameplay options. A new roadmap details the changes scheduled to be released in October and December 2026, as well as in March 2027.

Marathon Will No Longer Be Just an Extraction Shooter

Bungie had already acknowledged that Marathon reached fewer players than hoped, yet the studio remains committed to expanding the title beyond the Extraction genre’s current boundaries. In a new outlook, the team details how it will do so. The familiar PvPvE experience will stay central, but players will control how much risk and competition they face. In addition to the existing missions, cooperative PvE content and direct PvP modes are planned. The overhaul won’t happen all at once. Bungie is spreading the work across several major updates and has abandoned the previously planned fixed seasonal schedule. In the future, content will launch only after sufficient development and testing, rather than meeting a rigid seasonal deadline.

Progress and Economy Will Be Reset in October

The next step arrives on October 6 with the Nightfall Refresh, which will reset player progression and the in-game economy. Bungie says Season 2 progression issues forced this sweeping change: some players reached the endgame too quickly, while others fell far behind, so the system failed to work as intended.

The October update will also introduce a new Reward Pass, quality-of-life improvements, and adjustments to game balance and ongoing gameplay. The PvE activity “Vault Breaker” will return for a limited time, and Bungie will use the data from that event to improve future pure PvE content.

Symbiosis Brings Permanent PvE in December

The much larger change arrives on December 8. The Symbiosis update will bring Marathon its first permanent PvE mode. Players will be able to explore the world, test gear, and tackle challenges without being hunted by other teams.

It does not replace the classic PvPvE mode; instead, Bungie is broadening options to suit different player types within the same title. How rewards and progression are distributed across modes will be critical.

Symbiosis also introduces a revamped Perimeter Zone social hub with a shooting range and new-player improvements. The update adds Bishop, a new Runner skin described by Bungie as a fast, precise fighter built for surprise attacks and heavy melee damage.

A Team Deathmatch mode is set to offer classic PvP

An experimental Team Deathmatch mode will also launch in December. It offers a more direct, less demanding alternative to full Extraction rounds, letting players test gear and abilities in combat without planning a long mission or risking loot loss per match.

Whether Team Deathmatch stays permanent depends on the test results, as Bungie explicitly calls it an experiment. In our PS5 review of *Marathon*, the gunplay and atmosphere already impressed, though the unique Extraction concept narrowed the potential player pool.

The biggest overhaul is planned for March 2027

The next major update is scheduled for March 2027. Bungie is building a cohesive system of permanent PvE, PvP, and PvPvE modes with adjustable difficulty and intensity levels. Solo players and established teams will gain more opportunities.

Bungie also plans a new onboarding flow for newcomers, a revamped Cradle, greater freedom to customize Runner skins, and more focused missions with expanded storylines. New alien adversaries will demand stronger teamwork, and an unannounced zone will push players deeper into unexplored parts of the world.

Marathon is poised to evolve into a broader survival experience where cooperation, competition, and risky extraction missions coexist.

Bungie is under significant pressure to succeed

These plans come just days after an unusually candid admission from the studio’s new leadership. Bungie stated that Marathon had not achieved the reach they had hoped for, while Destiny was once again described as the foundation for the future. You can find all the background details in our article about Bungie’s new direction and Marathon’s weak launch. For Bungie and its owner, Sony, this restructuring is accordingly crucial. The studio must keep its current players while attracting new audiences without alienating the community. Whether permanent PvE, Team Deathmatch, and the new Marathon progression system can stabilize the game remains to be seen after the major updates. The first step arrives on October 6, before “Symbiosis” delivers the shooter’s biggest expansion yet in December. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
